Windmill Palm

Windmill Palm Tree Fathers Day Gift Guide
Low Maintenance, USDA Zones 7-11, Drought Tolerant

If your dad is more of a beach person, the Windmill Palm Tree will help bring a tropical paradise to his own yard. The Windmill Palm tree is one of the most cold tolerant palm tree cultivars available and we have even seen it grown as far North as Tennessee and Virginia all the way to the Pacific Northwest. The Windmill Palm has lush, green fronds that fan out from its branches with long leaves. This tree is perfect for planting around your pool and can be grown in a variety of locations. You can use Slow Release Fertilizer to enrich the soil for this tropical palm tree plant.

This evergreen palm cultivar is low maintenance and will grow to an average of 25 to 30 feet tall in maturity. It is most commonly seen around 10-15 feet tall and 6-10 feet wide. This species of fan palm, sometimes called the Chusan Palm from Chusan Island where Robert Fortune first saw cultivated specimens, has a slow growing growth habit. Best known for its pest and disease resistance, slow growth rate, and cold temperature tolerance. One of the hardiest palm trees out there! It even received the prestigious award of garden merit from the Royal Horticulture Society in the UK.

Thuja Green Giant

Fast Growing, USDA Zones 5-9, Winter Hardy

The Thuja Green Giant is the perfect tree for a natural privacy fence. The National Arboretum presents the ‘Green Giant’ which is a vigorously growing, pyramidal shaped evergreen with a dark green color that remains outstanding throughout hardiness range. The Thuja tree is ornamentally appealing as a single plant, specimen tree, a dense screen, or as a living frame for your landscape or garden. Plant your tree at your property line for ultimate privacy function. Don’t worry about the deer! It is deer resistant.

The Thujas hardiness zones are best in the department of agriculture plant hardiness zones 5-9 across the United States. This landscaping tree performs best in moist, fertile, well-drained soil conditions in full sun to partial shade. Ideal conditions for the giant Thuja tree are at least 4-6 hours of sun per day.

This large tree cannot handle wet sites or poorly drained soil types like heavy clay because of the possibility of root rot. The Thuja Green Giant Arborvitae growth rate is extremely fast! It can grow up to 3-5 feet per year once established, and it can quickly reach a height up to 40 feet tall and 20 feet wide at maturity. As young plants, they grow faster during the spring and summer growing season more than any other season.

Forest Pansy Redbud

Forest Pansy Redbud Gift Guide
Fall Colored Foliage, USDA Zones 5-9, Great for Small Spaces

With heart-shaped leaves and fall-colored foliage, what’s not to love. Your dad will appreciate the whimsical look contrasting the green plants in his landscape. The purple flowering tree is a fully leaved cultivar of the Missouri-native redbud tree. It is a small, deciduous tree featuring a spreading, flat-to-rounded crown, and can eventually grow to 20-30 feet high.

The Forest pansy redbud tree’s clusters of tiny, rosy-purple pea-like pink flowers grow profusely on the branches and mature trunks of the planted tree for 2-3 weeks in the early spring growing season.  Then the heart-shaped leaves and foliage emerge. The blooms are a more intense rose-purple than common eastern redbud.

This landscaping tree prefers well-drained soil but can thrive in a variety of soil types. It grows best in full sun to part shade and requires a lot of watering the first year to establish a strong root system. Forest Pansy Redbud trees are great small trees to put in your naturalized landscape where you don’t have the most room because they don’t take up too much space.

Assortment of 3 Blueberry Plants

Assortment of 3 Blueberry Bushes Fathers Day GIft Guide
Heat Resistant, Zones 7-9, Cross-Pollinators

If the dad in your life is into growing fruit right in his backyard, our Assortment of 3 Blueberry Plants will get him started on the right track. Blueberries require more than 1 plant for proper cross-pollination for the fruit to set. We suggest 3 plants of at least 2 different varieties for this reason. Rabbiteye varieties are resistant to insects and disease and perfect for home gardens.

Plant the rabbiteye cultivar in well-draining soil in full sun. We even specially formulate our very own Blueberry Soil Mix to amend your native soil with. These blueberries are native to the southeastern United States in USDA hardiness zones 7-9. The plants can grow up to 15 feet tall and 10 feet wide after many, many years, and require little pruning. Be sure to check out our blog post on How to Prune Blueberry Bushes. Growing blueberries is easy, fun, and rewarding. Blueberry production will begin in the first year of planting. You will have fresh blueberries in no time!

We hope that all the dad’s out there have a happy Father’s Day and are shown appreciation for all the hard work they do. Add a note during checkout and we will include a handwritten Fathers Day Card with the gift. Be sure to browse our website for more Father’s Day Gifts!
