The Pawnee Pecan tree is one of the most planted and beloved pecan trees in the US due to its yield potential for high-quality nut size and early season harvest dates.

This pecan tree variety is a cross between the Mohawk and Starking Hardy Giant varieties. It was produced in Texas in 1963 and has been popular in Western and Northern growing regions. Its early maturity makes it an optimum choice for shorter growing seasons.

Produces 56 nuts per lb with 54% kernel 2-3 weeks earlier than most other pecan varieties.

The pecans ripen around October and the excellent kernel color and quality of the large, thin-shelled nuts make them easy to crack and able to enjoy. Perfect for around the house or in a pie for the holiday season.

The Pawnee pecan tree has outstanding resistance to yellow aphids and is moderately scab resistant. This cultivar is also extremely heat-tolerant, making it a great southern tree.

Planting Pecan Trees

The Pawnee thrives planted in full sun to partial shade and can tolerate a variety of soil types though. Well-draining soil is best though for root development. This is a Type 1 pollinator and requires a Type 2 like Elliot Pecan, Stuart Pecan, or Sumner Pecan to produce nuts for pawnee pecan tree pollination.

The Pawnee pecan tree size can reach a height of up to 20-30 feet tall and 15-25 feet wide at full maturity. This makes it excellent for small spaces. The pawnee pecan tree growth rate is moderate to fast! It can grow up to 12-24 inches per year!

Grow across the United States in USDA plant hardiness zones 6-9. Water regularly the first year to establish a strong root system. Apply a slow release fertilizer at the top of the root ball annually for best results.

Once I saw the condition it arrived in, I changed plans and stuck it right in my front yard. Beautiful little tree. I truly recommend to anyone looking for a Pawnee Pecan that can't source it locally.
