Say hello to every gardener’s dream apple tree!
Legend states that the Red Delicious apple was named when its discoverer in Iowa sent samples to a commercial nursery in 1892. The nursery owner tasted one of the apples and exclaimed, “Delicious!” It has been replicated from graft unions ever since.
The Red Delicious Apple tree is one of the world’s most commonly planted apple varieties and is among the easiest and most dependable apple trees to grow. Beautiful clusters of pink buds open to reveal creamy white blooms. From September to October the apples will turn from a pale green to their familiar bright red color, signaling that they are ripe and ready to be picked.
The fruit’s thin skin and delicious crispness make the Red Delicious ideal for eating fresh off the tree and for baking. Around 700 chill hours will be needed for this apple tree. This popular apple tree bears fruit within 2-3 years of planting.
Red peel and sweetly tangy flavor make a tempting snack. One of the best pollinators for other varieties—so much so that it’s been called a “rooster” tree! Best as a short-storage eating apple. Pair with Granny Smith or Yellow Delicious for best cross pollinated apple variety.
