The fierce Aztec Grass is the perfect choice for a refined ground cover. This variety of ornamental grass looks almost like a rich, green and silver mat accented by its white flowers that appear in early spring, and can put the finishing touch on almost any garden or landscape.
The Aztec Grass is known for its dense clumping and attractive grass-like qualities that make it a great ground cover when grouped in a mass planting. The evergreen perennial prefers shade, but will tolerate full sun, and establishes itself quickly on rich, moist, well-drained soils. The grass will also tolerate less suitable conditions.
Aztec Grass adds a nice white color to the landscape. The green and silver variegated leaves are eye catching and easy to grow. Grasses that emerge late in the spring can fill voids left by spring-flowering bulbs and early spring perennials. The seed-heads of late-season grasses add ornamental value that persists into the winter months.
This grass can grow up to 12 inches tall in the first year. Once established, it can grow up to 2 feet tall and wide. Aztec Grass will need irrigation only amidst a severe drought. The year of planting be sure to water regularly because it is not drought tolerant until roots establish. Mow it once each year, preferably during late winter in order to get rid of the last year’s foliage. It is fairly deer resistant so don’t rely on them to prune it for you :)
