Ficus Elastica ‘Ruby’

Product Description

Pink plants are in style right now! Ficus Elastica ‘Ruby’ is another form of a Pink Variegated Rubber plant that has become increasingly grown indoors and for good reason!

With stunning pink, white, and green leaves that are splashed with brilliant colors – the Ficus Ruby plant does require more natural light than most houseplants to keep the colors coming through bright and bold. The beautiful tri-color leaves will leave your guests wondering where this exotic plant came from.

The Ruby Ficus Elastica is an excellent indoor houseplant for any room in the house including offices, bathrooms, bedrooms, or sunrooms. The low maintenance qualities allow it to be grown almost anywhere and with ease! There are many Ficus Elastica benefits to growing it inside your home. They are one of the very best plants for purifying the air and have a high transpiration rate meaning they increase humidity rates. Not only that, but houseplants are known to boost your mood and decrease stress and anxiety.

Ficus Elastica Ruby Care

With proper watering, sunlight, fertilization, and soil, you can keep your Ruby Ficus plant happy and healthy. Once you get the whole process down, it’s simply a once a week watering (or less), repotting every 2-3 years as it outgrows its container, and fertilizing annually for yearly growth, root development, and to provide the nutrients variegated rubber trees need to survive. We’ll explain more about this in the paragraphs below.

You can grow this pink plant outdoors in USDA hardiness zones 10-11, and any location outdoors for spring, summer, and fall. In colder locations, it will need to be moved indoors when temperatures drop below 50 F.

How to Water Rubber Plant

Pink rubber plants don’t like wet feet and having it in a pot with a drainage hole at the bottom of the pot is a must. Water the soil of the Ficus Ruby Rubber Plant when it feels dry to touch, usually about once every week or two. The worst thing you can do is provide excess water to your plant which can drown the root balls and cause root rot or yellow leaves. Dont allow the soil to become bone dry, you want a consistent watering frequency.

Ruby Ficus Light Requirements

The Variegated Ficus Elastica does require bright, indirect light to keep the large leaves thriving. A south or east facing window is best to provide optimum sun exposure. Keep away from A/c vents or windows that may produce cold drafts and harm the plant. Direct sunlight can scorch or burn the leaves and is not advised. If you are not seeing adequate variegation on your plant’s leaves, then it should be moved into an area with brighter light conditions. The more sunlight it receives the more the variegation will come out. Another symptom of too little light may be that the plant is dropping leaves – adjust accordingly!

When to Repot Ficus Elastica

You may need to repot your baby rubber plant every so often when it becomes rootbound or needs a bigger pot. Only repot during the active growing seasons of spring or summer. Ficus elastica potting soil should be well draining and fertile with lots of nutrients to enhance the life of the indoor plant. Any indoor potting mix or succulent soil should work perfectly fine and you can always add extra perlite if you think it needs to drain more.

How Fast Does Ficus Elastica Grow

With perfect growing conditions, you can see growth rates of 1-2 feet per year. An annual application of fertilizer will help speed up this process by providing minerals and nutrients the plant needs to grow. Ficus elastica indoors plants will not grow as quickly without sunlight to help them grow.

No shipping process is without a problem from time to time. On rare occasions some plants may experience some of the following during their transit: drooping, minor leaf-loss and/or minimal yellowing/discoloration, minor limb damage, etc. These instances are quite rare, but can happen when shipping plants in boxes.

Plants normally recover within a few weeks after planting. If a damaged box has injured your plant on the inside, please notify us within 5 days of receiving you package(s) by emailing us a photograph of the damage.

We always do our very best to ensure that your plants are packed and shipped in the safest, gentlest and most effective way possible.

Will my plants and trees look like the photographs?

Absolutely! Unlike other online nurseries, our photos are of actual plants and trees we’ve grown here, on our family operated nursery.

our story Lloyd nurseryGrowing our own plants and trees helps to ensure we ship you the best quality plants that are free of pests and diseases.

Your plants and trees may however not ship with flowers on them, like the photographs. This all depends on the time of year you buy your plant or tree. Crape Myrtle trees, for example, only bloom during the summer months, so if you purchase one during the spring or fall, they would ship without flowers. Once planted, your plants will grow and thrive giving you flowers for many years to come!

Pot Sizes

Pot sizes (commonly referred to in gallons) are shipped in the same size nursery trade pots which may vary in actual volume. Some plants may have been at the approximate pot size listed, but require excess dirt to be removed so that you will not be paying any additional shipping costs. This doesn’t happen very often though.

Care

Choose a planting location that offers adequate sunlight and shade in a low traffic area. Allow proper clearance for the mature growth size. Well-drained soil is ideal. Water regularly for the first planted year to ensure adequate water is available for establishing a strong root system. Prune as necessary to remove any damaged or dead foliage and to promote a well-balanced structure.

Planting Instructions:

Dig a hole approximately twice as wide as your new plant’s root ball and deep enough so that the top of the root ball is equal with the ground level.

Loosen the root ball using a small garden spade or by hand. Breaking smaller outer roots can encourage growth into the new soil, but take care to not damage large primary roots.

Place the plant in the hole and ensure that it is situated evenly upright.  Use the excavated soil to fill in around the root ball, using your foot to pack it in firmly. Thoroughly soak with a hose as you fill in the dirt. Take great care to not leave any gaps or air spaces around the root ball as this could kill the plant.

A 2-4 inch layer of mulch is strongly recommended to help retain moisture and discourage weed growth. Apply mulch over the entire planting area but keep away from the stems or trunk by a few inches. Ensure that the plant and surrounding soil is completely soaked with water.

To ensure the proper nutrients are available for the life of your plant our proprietary Perfect Plants Special Blend Soil and a once yearly application of Nutricote Total 360 Fertilizer are great considerations for your new plants!
