Say hello to every gardener’s dream apple tree! This variety of apple is a chance seedling – meaning it was unintentionally bred. The unique traits of this sweet apple then led it to be intentionally cloned for commercial use.
The Golden Delicious apple tree is one of the world’s most popular apple trees and is among the easiest and most dependable apple trees to grow. Beautiful clusters of pink buds open to reveal creamy white blooms in early spring. From September to October the fruit will turn from a pale green to their familiar golden green color, signaling that they are ripe and ready to be picked.
The apple’s thin skin and delicious crispness in its white flesh make the Golden Delicious ideal for eating good fresh off the tree and for baking. The apple’s yellow peel and sweetly tangy flavor make a tempting snack. Our favorite way to use this is as apple pie or apple sauce.
The Golden Delicious is self-fertile but also makes one of the best pollinators for other varieties such as Red Delicious or Granny Smith because it has such a long bloom period—so much so that it’s been called a “rooster” tree! It provides pollen so readily for other varieties that even a neighboring apple tree down the road can use this tree for cross pollination. One of the most useful apple varieties to have because of this.
This sweet tart apple cultivar grows best in USDA plant hardiness zones 4-8. It can grow in most of the United States. The Golden Delicious apple season will start at different times of the year depending on where you live and when your last frost it. Best as a short-storage eating apple.
