Popular for a reason, this hardy evergreen is perfect for achieving height and presence quickly as a privacy tree.
The Leyland Cypress tree has a very rapid growth rate. It can grow fast up to 2-3 feet per year and reaches up 40 to 60 feet at full maturity. It’s bright green foliage remains striking year-round and is feathery soft to the touch. This tree grows very densely, maintaining its slender, conical shape naturally.
Planted as a hedge, it will become a tight, dense barrier for view, sound or wind reduction. The perfect privacy tree! Planted alone, the Leyland Cypress tree will become a formidable landscape addition and can also be pruned to have a formal, Christmas tree appearance. You choose! Either way, it’s pyramidal shape makes this cypress tree an excellent choice.
Plant these fast growing evergreen trees in full sun across the United States in USDA planting zones 6-10. This tree is a hybrid by accidentally cross pollinating the Monterey cypress (cupressus macrocarpa) with the Nootka cypress or Alaskan Cedar.
Be sure to water thoroughly the first year of planting to establish a strong root system. The shallow roots of this drought tolerant tree could benefit from the addition of a slow release fertilizer in early spring. Leyland cypress grows upright and does best in well drained soils.
Planting Leyland Cypress near the ocean is ok too. It is tolerant of salt sprays and can be grown coastal.
