Popular for a reason, this hardy evergreen is perfect for achieving height and presence quickly as a privacy tree. The Leyland Cypress is a fast growing tree that can provide a quick solution to problem views or nosey neighbors!
The Leyland Cypress growth rate is very rapid. It can grow fast up to 2-3 feet per year and reaches up 40 to 60 feet tall at full maturity and 15-25 feet wide. It’s bright green foliage remains striking year-round and is feathery soft to the touch. This tree grows very densely, maintaining its slender, conical shape naturally.
Planted as a hedge, it will become a tight, dense barrier for view, sound, or wind reduction. The perfect cypress tree for privacy! Planted alone, the Leyland Cypress tree will become a formidable landscape addition and can also be pruned to have a formal, Christmas tree appearance. You choose!
Either way, it’s pyramidal shape makes this cypress tree an excellent choice.
Planting Leyland Cypress
Plant these fast growing evergreen trees in full sun across the United States in USDA planting zones 6-10. This Leyland tree is a hybrid by accidentally cross pollinating the Monterey cypress (cupressus macrocarpa) with the Nootka cypress or Alaskan Cedar.
Be sure to water thoroughly the first year of planting to establish a strong root system. The shallow roots of this drought tolerant tree could benefit from the addition of a slow release fertilizer in early spring at the top of the root ball.
Leyland cypress grows upright and does best in well drained soils. Ultimately, it can tolerate a variety of soil types and is not particularly picky.
Planting Leyland Cypress near the ocean is alright too. It is tolerant of salt sprays and can be grown coastal. It is also disease resistant.
