This LSU Purple fig tree was produced in 1991 after many trial and errors to perfect this succulent fig tree! Feast your taste buds on the deliciously lush purple ficus carica fig! Named after the iconic fig breeding program at the Louisiana State University that has been around since the 1950s.
The LSU Fig tree features closed eye, medium-sized fruit with a white juicy flesh and strawberry colored insides with high sugar content. This highly productive fig cultivar is a vigorous grower with an upright habitat. The dark purple fresh figs taste deliciously sweet and are sure to invigorate your senses.
Planting Fig Trees
The LSU Purple Fig is exceptionally pest and disease resistant and is also self-pollinating. This fig variety is heat tolerant and prefers full sun and loamy, well-drained soil. Purple fig fruit will begin to ripen in July and continue through frost.
Grow this fast growing fig tree in USDA growing zones 7-10 across the United States. If you are in an exceptionally cold area, you may to winter protect this fruit tree.
The best time to plant a fig is in early spring so it has the whole growing season to establish. You can even grow this fig tree in a container if limited on space. LSU fig will set fruit in the first year of planting.
LSU Fig Tree Care
Other planting care instructions include: a 2-3 inch layer of mulch or organic matter will help retain moisture and save the young trees from winter frosts. During the growing season, a slow release fertilizer at the top of the root ball will help fruit set and root systems to grow strong.
The LSU fig tree height can grow up to 8-10 feet tall and wide. Perfect for organic gardeners looking for small trees in their landscape. It is a deciduous plant and tree meaning it loses its leaves during the winter months.

WOW this fig tree has absolutely exceeded my expectations. The first photo was from when I recieved it a month ago from Perfect Plants vs. today. It’s just doubled in size – new branches everywhere, new foliage, green as could be. I cannot wait to get fruit eventually but it’s a simply gorgeous plant. Would buy over and over again.
