Product Description
The Nellie Stevens holly tree has been gaining popularity as an evergreen privacy hedge!
Ilex Nellie Stevens has dense evergreen leaves that are deep green in color and prickly with spikes on the dark green leaves. In the spring, this hybrid holly that is a cross of Chinese holly and English holly will produce dainty white flowers. It is prized for its low maintenance and care, and being pest and disease resistant.
It produces bright red berries in the fall that is perfect for attracting birds and other wildlife into your landscape. Nellie R Stephans Holly shrub does not require another pollenizer to produce the berries but will produce bushels more with a male pollinator nearby.
With a broad, pyramidal shape form, the Nellie Stevens Holly hedge can protect your yard from noisy neighbors, provide year round color with the green foliage, and also acts as a windbreak.
Plant the Nellie R Stevens holly tree as a privacy screen, individually as a specimen tree, or as a formal box hedge.
Nellie Stevens Holly Care
Grow this fast growing holly tree across the United States in USDA plant hardiness zones 6-9. It can tolerate full sun but prefers to be planted in an area with partial shade and protected from the hot afternoon sun.
Most evergreen holly trees prefer slightly acidic, well drained soil. They will benefit from the addition of a slow release fertilizer in early spring to jump start the growing season.
The fast growing habit of the Nellie Stevens holly hedge is a prime reason why it is so loved! The Nellie Stevens holly growth rate is up to 3 feet per year. At mature size, it can reach up to 15-25 feet tall as a hedge, planted individually it can grow even larger — up to 25-30 feet in height. The mature width is up to 5-10 feet wide. Nellie holly is loved for its symmetrical shape.
We recommend spacing the Nellie R Stevens at least 5-6 feet apart for a living wall or privacy hedge appearance. Water well the first year of planting to establish a strong root system. After 1 year, the holly bush is mildly drought tolerant and will only need watering during dry spells.
Nellie stevens holly pruning can happen at virtually any time of the year. These evergreen trees respond very well to pruning and can be shaped to any desired size. We do not recommend pruning hollies in the early spring, doing so will cut off the spring flowers that bloom on old wood and eventually turn into the orange red berries.
