The botanical name of this plant is illicium parviflorum and it is native to central Florida. Generally considered a large shrub or can be pruned to a small tree. This plant and tree gets very large throughout maturity. Can grow up to 10-15 feet tall and 6-10 feet wide.
The Ocala Anise’s elliptical-shaped leaves give off an aromatic scent when crushed and the shrub features greenish-yellow subtle flowers in the spring, followed by a star-shaped seedpods. This shrub does well in sandy, acidic soils but will adapt to other soil types as well. Plants that are grown in shady areas have rich, dark green leaves, whereas plants grown in the sun tend to be more yellowish green.
This cultivar will remain upright and tight in full sunlight, and when grown in shade takes on a more relaxed habitat with darker leaves and fewer blooms. Grows best in the southern United States. The USDA plant hardiness zones at 8-10.
