Product Description
The Painted Lady Hibiscus Tree is as gorgeous as it is easy to care for!Hibiscus rosa sinensis ‘Painted Lady’ is the perfect tropical specimen tree for tropical and subtropical gardens. Beginning late spring until fall, the large, pink flower blossoms will open up profusely to provide continuous hibiscus blooms throughout the growing season. The hibiscus flowers are large, rosy pink red in color with dark red throats and central pistils and stamen.
Contrasting the reblooming flower buds is dark green foliage that stays evergreen in most warm climates. In cooler climates, it is considered deciduous or semi-evergreen as the green leaves may drop for winter. This sun loving shrub is commonly called Chinese Hibiscus, or Rose Mallow Hibiscus.
The tropical hibiscus tree’s flowers will attract pollinators such as butterflies, hummingbirds, and bees to your garden. Use this hardy hibiscus tree to line sidewalks, create a focal point as a specimen tree, or plant in containers as a patio accent tree.
Hibiscus Plant Care
Plant hibiscus trees across the United States in USDA plant hardiness zones 9-11. It can tolerate the spring, summer, and fall months in colder zones but it will need to be protected or brought indoors near a sunny window for the winter cold weather. Grow tropical hibiscus indoors only when the weather is not suiting outside. It does require at least 6-8 hours of sunlight to thrive. Move the potted plant outdoors when the weather warms up in spring. Hibiscus performs best with full sun but can tolerate partial shade. Protect from strong winds.
Well draining soil that is slightly acidic or commercial potting mix that is rich in organic matter is best. A slow release fertilizer applied during early spring will encourage flower production and a thick layer of mulch will help to retain moisture during times of drought. It does require more frequent watering during the summer months to establish a strong root system. Keep the potting soil moist when watering your hibiscus especially if it’s a potted hibiscus species and it is newly planted.
If you experience leaves turning yellow on your tropical hibiscus plant, look into the watering habits. Yellow leaves indicate too little or excess water as the perennial plant grows. Too much water can cause root rot and can kill the plant. Make sure to choose a pot with a drainage hole.
The Painted Lady Hibiscus size is up to 6-10 feet tall and 3-5 feet wide as a mature tree. It has an upright growth habit. This pink hibiscus plant has already been pruned into a small tree from its flowering shrub form. You can perform other pruning cuts to maintain the desired height and size you would like on your flowering plant. Prune any diseased or dead branches and shape the side branches accordingly when they start to grow wild.
This ornamental flowering tree is low maintenance, heat tolerant, and easy to grow. It is also deer resistant. The colorful blooms make a perfect tropical planting or cut flowers!
