This flowering crabapple cultivar boasts reddish-purple blooms with dark green leaves in the spring, and deep red foliage in the summer. At maturity, the pink flowering Crabapple tree growth rate will reach 20 feet to 25 feet tall and has a medium growth rate habit. A perfect medium sized tree for your yard!
Crabapple tree flower color is dependent on the variety and this ornamental tree has bright pink almost purple blooms. The pink flowers appear in early spring and bright red fruit appears in the summer months which makes it an excellent statement piece. Fruit is less than 2 inches in diameter and can be spiced or used in jelly.
The Malus Summer Wonder Crabapple variety is self-pollinating and makes an excellent specimen tree.
How to Care for Crabapple Trees
It is extremely cold hardy. Grow crabapples best across the United States in USDA growing zones 4-8. This tree is also pest and diseases resistant especially to fire blight and apple scab. Makes an excellent pollinator for other fruit trees in the area.
Plant your trees in full sun and well-drained soil for best results. The tree can tolerate a wide range of planting sites. During their first year, they will require regular watering, especially during the warmer months to establish a strong root system.
The best time to prune Crabapple Trees in the early spring so it has the whole growing season to recover. Prune away water sprouts close to the trunk as they can suck nutrients and growing strength away from the plant. Prune large branches or diseased branches near the branch collar to avoid damaging the tree. Major pruning should never occur after spring. Check out our Basic Pruning for Trees and Shrubs blog for more information.
May benefit from adding special blend slow-release fertilizer at the top of the root ball near the base of the tree once a year for maintenance. Although it is a disease resistant cultivar, this will help protect against powdery mildew.
Please note, these dwarf crab apple trees do not ship bare root. They ship rooted in a container in the soil for the health of the tree. The best time of year to plant this semi double flowering tree is in early spring.

My Summer Wonder Crabapple started producing fruit in late April. We just planted it in late February. It is about 8 feet tall. I’m wondering when the fruit will be ripe. They are about 1 inch in diameter and reddish purple.
