One of the absolute favorite border plants among gardeners. The hardy Variegated Liriope cultivar can tolerate a variety of soil and environmental conditions and are incredibly easy to maintain!
This charming plant hosts variegated dark green and white leaves striped and beautiful violet-blue flowers in the mid summer. The liriope muscari variegata lavender flower spikes are similar to those of grape hyacinth.
Following the purple flowers is blue-black berries that appear in the fall. The tall leaves of the variegated liriope plants are also known as monkey grass as all members of the liriope family are called.
The more sun the liriope variegata is exposed to the brighter the overall colors will be. Just make sure it is not too much full sun or too intense heat exposure or else slight browning of the blade tips can occur. The vibrant yellow stripes add color and act as a huge statement piece during the growing season.
Variegated Liriope Care
The Variegated lilyturf is exceptionally versatile and will thrive in fully sunlight to shady locations. The edging plant prefers rich, moist and slightly acidic soil, but will adapt to a wide variety of soil types. Keep well drained soil conditions preferably for variegated liriope care.
This ground cover plant grows in clump forming masses and its root system will spread. Water thoroughly the first year to establish a strong root system. After establishing, the plant is fairly drought tolerant.
The liriope muscari’s grass like foliage grows up to 1.5 feet tall and 2 feet wide. Do not plant in full afternoon sun when the temperature is hottest. This lily turf prefers part shade to full shade in the afternoon. Divide the established plants in early spring.
Not the most cold hardy for northern states. Does best in the warmer climates of the United States in USDA growing zones 6-11.
