The Wintergreen Boxwood, aka Korean Boxwood or Littleleaf Boxwood, is one of the more cold hardy varieties of the boxwood shrubs. It features a very dense, compact growth habit, making it excellent for borders or fences. The evergreen foliage remains green all year long on healthy plants.

A great choice as a foundation plant, formal hedge, or in landscape designs. This broadleaf evergreen Korean boxwood wintergreen variety has a botanical name of Buxus microphylla. Wintergreen boxwood bush is also well known for its continuous dark green color all through the winter season.

Wintergreen Boxwood Bush Care

The Wintergreen Boxwood growth rate is up to 3-4 feet tall and 4-5 feet wide making it a more boxy plant. It is slow growing naturally in full sun to part shade and prefers well draining soil.  Boxwood Buxus microphylla koreana is susceptible to root rot if planted in wet soils. Fertilize lightly in early spring with a slow release fertilizer near the root ball. A layer of mulch applied heavily around the root system will help with moisture retention. This variety responds very well to pruning and can be maintained in a wide variety of desired shapes, sizes, heights, widths, forms, etc. Regular watering is important the first year of planting to establish roots, without water the leaves may turn yellow.

It is incredibly disease resistant, salt spray tolerant, and also deer resistant. This cold hardy boxwood variety can grow across most regions of the United States in USDA hardiness zones 5-9 and does not need much protection from winter winds. Tolerant of transplanting, the shallow roots are easy to move to the desired planting site.

The Wintergreen Boxwood prefers full sun to part shade for optimum growth. In hotter climates however, they appreciate afternoon shade. Avoid planting in windy areas. Their soil needs are adaptable, although they prefer organic, well-drained soil. Weekly watering is recommended for the first two years after planting your Boxwood. Mulching is recommended for retaining moisture.

Boxwoods can be planted 2-3 feet apart from their centers to form a hedge and require shearing or pruning in the spring to achieve and maintain their desired shape.

Dig a hole approximately twice as wide as your new plant’s root ball and deep enough so that the top of the root ball is equal with the ground level.

Loosen the root ball using a small garden spade or by hand. Breaking smaller outer roots can encourage growth into the new soil, but take care to not damage large primary roots.

Place the plant in the hole and ensure that it is situated evenly upright. Use the excavated soil to fill in around the root ball, using your foot to pack it in firmly. Thoroughly soak with a hose as you fill in the dirt. Take great care to not leave any gaps or air spaces around the root ball as this could kill the plant.

A 2-4 inch layer of mulch is strongly recommended to help retain moisture and discourage weed growth. Apply mulch over the entire planting area but keep away from the stems or trunk by a few inches. Ensure that the plant and surrounding soil is completely soaked with water.

To ensure the proper nutrients are available for the life of your Wintergreen Boxwood, our proprietary Perfect Plants Special Blend Soil and a once yearly application of Nutricote Total 360 Fertilizer are great considerations for your new plants!

Bought 20 of the 1 gallon size Boxwoods to plant close together in hope of making a small hedge around a fountain. They came in 3 different boxes. A little dirt got out of the pots, but the plants looked great. I planted them right away and on my way to having a hedge.
