Few privacy trees offer the enchanting look of the Japanese Cryptomeria Radicans trees. Have passersby stop at all times of the year in awe at this breathtaking privacy screen!

This Japanese Cedar tree is a handsome coniferous evergreen featuring green foliage that is soft, exceptionally dense, blue-green, and feathery. The red-brown bark of the Cryptomeria trees contrasts the spirally arranged blue-green needle leaves nicely. In the fall, the branch tips will produce small seed cones.

It grows in a columnar to pyramidal growth habit, therefore, offering good contrast to its dark green leafed evergreen leaves. The Cryptomeria Japonica Radicans is a quick grower with a single trunk and is not prone to the tip blight from which many other japonica cultivars suffer. It is also resistant to pests and diseases, even deer resistant, and drought tolerant. The package deal!

This privacy tree’s habit is tall and slender and offers year-round beauty as a cedar tree for privacy or specimen tree. It is a fast-growing evergreen tree of the cypress family that is perfect for borders, foundation plantings, or rock gardens.

The Cryptomeria Radicans growth rate reaches 12 to 16 feet tall within 5 years of planting. It can grow up to 3-4 feet per year.  Mature heights of the radicans grow 30 to 40 feet tall sometimes up to 50 feet and 15-20 feet wide.

The Radicans thrive in full sun to partial shade and well-drained soil. However, the Japanese Cedar can adapt to a variety of soil conditions including clay soils; it does best in moist, enriched garden soil types. Light shade is best as it prefers growing in full sun in most planting sites. Space these fast-growing evergreen privacy trees 5 to 6 feet apart for a dense privacy screen or perimeter planting. You can even plant to protect from the winter winds! Their fast growth rate will help in no time!

Prune your ornamental tree to the desired shape. If left untouched, it will grow in a pyramid shape. Grows best across the United States in USDA growing zones 5-9. The emerald green needles may turn bronze in cold temperatures.

Planting your Cryptomeria Trees

Your order will include planting instructions for these cryptomeria japonica radicans. You can also check out our Evergreen Tree Grow Guide for more information on planting evergreen conifers. It is shipped rooted in soil (not bare root) to help establish a strong root system when you plant it. Be sure to plant it the same business day as it arrives or as soon as possible

The Cryptomeria shrub grows quickly – especially during the growing season (spring and fall). Keep soil moist and water deeply to the top of the root during the first year of planting. They are fairly disease resistant to blight and leaf spot but adding a slow-release fertilizer at the top of the root ball will help with maintenance.

Shipping information

Once your Cryptomeria Radicans Tree order is placed, we will ship your plant(s) within seven business days year round unless during the checkout process you request otherwise in the space provided to do so.

Perfect Plants’ shipping specialists carefully package your plants using a proven packaging method that ensures your plants arrive healthy, colorfully alive and ready to flourish. We’ve coined the term ‘upside down box test’ and we do just that; we carefully package so that regardless of the direction your box is handled, it will not harm your precious plant that’s inside.

No shipping process is without a problem from time to time. On rare occasions some plants may experience some of the following during their transit: drooping, minor leaf-loss and/or minimal yellowing/discoloration, minor limb damage, etc. These instances are quite rare, but can happen when shipping plants in boxes.

Plants normally recover within a few weeks after planting. If a damaged box has injured your plant on the inside, please notify us within 5 days of receiving you package(s) by emailing us a photograph of the damage.

We always do our very best to ensure that your plants are packed and shipped in the safest, gentlest and most effective way possible.

Will my plants and trees look like the photographs?

Absolutely! Unlike other online nurseries, our photos are of actual plants and trees we’ve grown here, on our family operated nursery.

Growing our own plants and trees helps to ensure we ship you the best quality plants that are free of pests and diseases.

Your plants and trees may however not ship with flowers on them, like the photographs. This all depends on the time of year you buy your plant or tree. Crape Myrtle trees, for example, only bloom during the summer months, so if you purchase one during the spring or fall, they would ship without flowers. Once planted, your plants will grow and thrive giving you flowers for many years to come!

Pot Sizes

Pot sizes (commonly referred to in gallons) are shipped in the same size nursery trade pots which may vary in actual volume. Some plants may have been at the approximate pot size listed, but require excess dirt to be removed so that you will not be paying any additional shipping costs. This doesn’t happen very often though.

Shipping Fees

Our shipping charges are based on the value of your order.  Please use the chart below to see what your shipping charge will be.

The Cryptomeria Radicans or Japanese Cedar prefers full sun or partial shade. It adapts well to most well-drained soil types. This evergreen is quite drought tolerant, but should be watered regularly until established. It functions beautifully as an ornamental tree or as a dense privacy hedge.

Little pruning is needed for the Cryptomeria to maintain it’s conical shape. However, an early summer shearing or pruning will encourage new growth and promote a more formal pyramid shape if desired. Dead, damaged or poorly structured branches should be removed. Keeping the base of the tree weed-free will allow greater airflow and disease resistance.

When planting multiples, the Radicans centers should be spaced approximately 15 feet apart.

Dig a hole approximately twice as wide as your new plant’s root ball and deep enough so that the top of the root ball is equal with the ground level.

Loosen the root ball using a small garden spade or by hand. Breaking smaller outer roots can encourage growth into the new soil, but take care to not damage large primary roots.

Place the plant in the hole and ensure that it is situated evenly upright. Use the excavated soil to fill in around the root ball, using your foot to pack it in firmly. Thoroughly soak with a hose as you fill in the dirt. Take great care to not leave any gaps or air spaces around the root ball as this could kill the plant.

A 2-4 inch layer of mulch is strongly recommended to help retain moisture and discourage weed growth. Apply mulch over the entire planting area but keep away from the stems or trunk by a few inches. Ensure that the plant and surrounding soil is completely soaked with water.

To ensure the proper nutrients are available for the life of your Cryptomeria Radicans, our proprietary Perfect Plants Special Blend Soil and a once yearly application of Nutricote Total 360 Fertilizer are great considerations for your new plants!

Lovely tree good size great condition

Mike M.

Plant arrived in perfect shape, hence their namesake. My favorite nursery!

My first time buying from Perfect Plants was an A+! The ten Cryptomeria Radicans trees I ordered all arrived in excellent condition - a result of great packaging. The trees are a beautiful green with a hint of blue and look very healthy; and are about 2.5 ft tall. I'm really happy with my purchase and will buy from Perfect Plants again.

My Perfect Plants provides wonderful customer service. They were extremely helpful to me in my second time ordering from them. They provided links and additional information in the care of the trees I ordered. Alex and team gave a very high levy of customer service I have been bragging about their products and services to everyone I can. The care that goes into shipping of the live trees ordered is impeccable. How they designed the shipping method is innovative. They honored my tree warranty on my previous ordered. The team wants your live plants to survive and flourish as much as their customers do and go to great lengths to ensure success. I’ll order again!

Received my Cryptomeria trees today and they are more than I expected. Well packaged for the sake of the plant. The soil still had moisture in the planters. Sunk them right away and am over the moon happy with them. The Customer Service was great working with me even during the worst hurricane ever. Thank you so much! I love my Cryptomerias.
