Purple, Pink, or Blue Blooms — Endless Options for Summer Flowers!

The Original Endless Summer Hydrangea shrub is a medium to large-sized flowering shrub, also known as a ‘bigleaf hydrangea.’ There is no better way to decorate your summer garden than with bright clusters of fuchsia or cornflower blue blooms, set in contrast against dark green leaves.

This pink or blue hydrangea variety quite literally brings you an endless summer with its prolific blooms—flowering at least twice a summer! Endless Summer® may be blue, pink, or lavender, depending on the soil pH in which it is grown.

Each flower cluster or mop head is like a bouquet in and of itself. Nothing heralds the arrival of spring-like hydrangea flowers!

Hydrangeas are not only beautiful and delicate looking but are also cold-hardy and drought-tolerant. Hydrangea is also a deciduous shrub with a dense growth pattern and a rounded shape overall. The leaves of Hydrangea Endless Summer are dark to medium green with a slight glossy sheen. The leaves are large and well-veined. They start out rounded and taper to a delicate point.

Endless Summer Bigleaf Hydrangeas will bloom with magnificent clustering blooms standing proudly atop sturdy long stems. They really put on a show when blowing and swaying gently in a breeze.

The 8-inch flower clusters start out green in early spring and gradually intensify to their mature color. The everblooming flower clusters repeat in cycles all summer long. Endless Summer Hydrangea offers a wide variety of vivid colors. The flowering shrub comes in bright blue, purple, or warm pink.

The large flower clusters are a great addition to flower arrangements fresh or dried. They are often used in interior design and event decorating.

Endless Summer Hydrangea Care

Endless Summer Blue hydrangeas are easy to care for. They resist disease and are drought-tolerant. Due to the texture of their leaves, they are not desired by deer. Overall, they are very low maintenance.

Endless summer hydrangea grows best in hardiness zones 4 through 9. They are winter hardy, most often don’t need any winter protection, and can withstand temperatures as low as -30 degrees Fahrenheit.

Plant them in evenly moist, nutrient-dense, and well-drained soil. Soil pH should range between 6.0 – 8.0 (Moderately acidic to moderately alkaline). The soil pH will have a direct effect on the color. The more acidic the soil, the bluer the flowers will become. The more alkaline the soil is, the pinker it will become. Purple flowers will result from being more in the middle. How fun, right?!

They do well in full sun or partial shade. In the Northern United States, this hydrangea prefers morning sun only, with scattered shade in the afternoon. In the Southern United States, it prefers dappled shade all day. These light conditions will provide the best flower production.

For the Hydrangea Macrophylla Endless Summer®, you will need to follow a regular watering schedule during the first growing season to establish a deep, extensive root system. However, don’t overwater or allow the roots to become waterlogged, as this can cause root rot. If you live in an extremely hot climate or in the Southern United States, you may want to water your endless summer hydrangea regularly to encourage ongoing flower growth.

Endless Summer Hydrangea Pruning

Well, the good news is that Endless Summer hydrangeas do not need pruning. In fact, it is best to leave the plants alone for the first 4 – 5 years so they can establish well. Additionally, endless summer hydrangea flowers continue to grow and bloom on both new and old stems.

Avoid pruning Endless Summer hydrangea in the fall at all costs. In fact, you should only prune blue endless summer hydrangea in May, which allows its buds to form after the winter.

When pruning Endless Summer hydrangea, try to only cut back on old, dead, and diseased wood, leaving all green new growth untouched. You can deadhead them after the first set of flowers bloom from spring growth, allowing you to trim old and fading flowers before the next bloom.

Endless Summer Hydrangea Size

An Endless Summer hydrangea shrub can grow into a full-size bush with a height of around 3-5 feet and a width of 3-5 feet at full maturity. Space your plants about 3.5 feet apart to form a hedge. If you want space between your hydrangeas, space them up to 8 feet apart.

Endless Summer Hydrangea In Pots

Endless Summer blue hydrangea grows really well in pots as their roots tend to grow aggressively and fill the container space. You can let them grow as they naturally do when planting them in containers. It also helps them look very elegant and beautiful. You can place a potted Endless Summer hydrangea in your garden, patio, and yard for a charming look!

Endless Summer Hydrangea Bloom Time

Blue Endless Summer hydrangea starts to bloom in the spring and through the summer and sometimes into fall. They can bloom on both new and old growth and are considered a mid season bloomer. Be sure to look out for and protect any buds growing on the old wood to help ensure you get the most flowers during your bloom.

How to Add Endless Summer Blue Hydrangea to Your Garden

Place hydrangeas under and around your favorite trees for a bold pop of color. Use them as a hedge to line garden paths or lawn borders. They do best when planted directly into the ground. They will establish well and as a perennial, will come back every year.

However, they can be grown in containers if you so desire or if you live in a colder climate zone and need to bring them in during harsh winters.

Endless summer hydrangeas are a wonderful choice for your garden space. They will continue to provide stunning beauty for many years to come. Their large bright blooms will transform your landscape and improve curb appeal!
