Winter Blooming Shrub Perfect for Mass Plantings

This evergreen plant is both beautiful and versatile in the landscape. Dystillium Blue Cascade shrub is a dense, compact evergreen that is pest and disease-resistant. 

It’s an easy-to-grow plant that will tolerate many environmental and soil conditions. It needs minimal care and adds interest to the landscape year-round.

The plant develops cascading branches that are covered with dense mats of oval leaves. The leaves are bluish-green and have distinct raised veins. The color variation of the leaves gives the plant a layered effect as the branches cascade over the side of a planter or along the ground.

As a flowering shrub, Blue Cascade Dystillium blooms are produced as dark red flowers in late winter until early spring. The flowers have a long vase life and are ideal to use in cut flower arrangements.

This plant tolerates heat and is drought-tolerant, making it a versatile choice for borders or mass plantings. It thrives in southern climates where the summers are hot, humid, and dry and the winter weather is mild.

Blue Cascade Evergreen Dystillium Care

Blue Cascade is hardy in USDA growing zones 6-9. However, in the colder climates of zone 6 is lower the plant may act like a semi-evergreen and drop its leaves during the cold winter months.

It can be planted at any time of the year as long as the ground is not frozen.

Plant in full or partial sun in well-draining soil. When growing in a container, start with good-quality potting soil and add compost to ensure the soil will drain well.

Blue Cascade will reach a mature height of 3-4 feet and be equally as tall. Plants grown in containers will be slightly smaller when mature.

Pruning is not needed for the shrub to be healthy or productive. Pruning is only needed to remove dead or damaged branches or stray branch that is spoiling the overall shape of the shrub.

Feed the plant annually in the spring with a balanced plant food formulated for trees and shrubs.

Water weekly for the first year after planting. After the shrub becomes established only water during times of prolonged drought.

Container-grown plants will need to be watered more often. Water daily during the hottest part of summer and less often when the weather is cooler. Ensure the container has plenty of bottom drainage holes so the excess water can drain through the soil quickly.

Prune in late winter or early spring before new growth appears. 

Add a 2-inch layer of organic mulch around the plants. This will help the soil retain moisture and prevent weed growth. The mulch will slowly decompose and add nutrients to the soil. Add a fresh layer of mulch each year in the spring.
