Shop the Best Shrubs and Hedges

Shrubs and hedges do the heavy lifting in a landscape. They frame a yard, soften hard edges, and give you something beautiful to look at every month of the year. Here at Perfect Plants Nursery we have been growing bushes and hedges in our North Florida fields since 1980, so the shrubs and hedges for sale on this page are not drop-shipped from a warehouse. We root them, grow them on, and care for them ourselves before they ever ship to your door.

Shrubs are a do-it all collection of live plants. We put together this collection for the homeowners who want a fast growing border, a flowering hedge that pulls in pollinators, or a tidy evergreen foundation planting. Regardless of the landscape project, you will find mature shrubs for sale here in several sizes. A few things to think through before you buy a shrub or hedge for sale: your planting site is the most important factor. Is it full sun or shade? What are your soil conditions? How much room do these plants have to fill out at their mature height and width? And do you want flowers? Be sure to check your USDA plant hardiness zone before you make that big decision, and lean on our Grow Guides whenever you need a second opinion.

Most Popular Shrubs and Hedges

With hundreds of bushes and hedges to choose from, it helps to start with the workhorses our repeat customers reach for again and again. Below are our favorite hedge shrubs we have for sale, grouped so you can skim quickly and find the right plant for your yard.

Azaleas

Azalea plants are some of the most beloved flowering shrubs in the South, prized for their long bloom periods from early spring into summer. Our azalea shrubs for sale come in several sizes, and a couple of reblooming favorites make wonderful flowering hedges:

Hydrangeas

Buying hydrangea shrubs online has never been easier. These hardy, deciduous shrubs carry large cone-shaped and ball-shaped flower heads above bright green foliage, and they bring a pop of color to part-shade spots where other bushes struggle. A few of our favorites are:

Boxwoods and Evergreen Hedges

Looking for an evergreen shrub for sale that is low maintenance and easy to care for? Boxwood hedges are a classic choice for a border plant, foundation planting, or clipped specimen, and they grow happily in containers too. A few we grow and recommend:

Gardenias

Gardenia plants are among the best small shrubs for sale when you want to greet visitors with that unmistakable perfumey scent. Gardenia shrubs bloom across spring and summer as long as they are cared for, preferring acidic, well-draining soil and a partially shaded spot. Deadhead spent flowers to keep the bloom cycle going, and check the Gardenia Shrub Grow Guide before planting.

Border and Specimen Shrubs

Not every spot calls for a tall hedge. When you want a lower bordering plant or a standout specimen, these are a few of our growers' picks:

How to Grow the Best Shrubs in Your Neighborhood

After 45 years of growing bushes and hedges, we have learned that a great-looking landscape comes down to a few fundamentals done well. Get the planting right, keep up with seasonal pruning and feeding, and your shrubs will reward you for years. Here is how our growers do it, and for a deeper dive on any single plant, our shrub grow guide walks you through the specifics.

How to Plant Shrubs

It all starts with the right spot. Choose a planting site with the light and water your particular shrub prefers, then dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and work some fresh, nutrient-rich soil into the bottom. Set the shrub in so the top of the root ball sits level with the ground, backfill with soil, and water it in well. From there, a little regular attention is all it takes. Always check your USDA plant hardiness zone before planting so your new shrub is a good match for your area.

How to Trim Hedges

Non-flowering and evergreen hedges only need trimming as needed, and the trick is to reshape them before they get overgrown rather than after. Snip back the longer branches and open up the interior so sunlight and air can move through, which stimulates healthy growth from the inside out. Do not forget to tidy up the base near the roots while you are at it.

How to Prune Shrubs

Pruning shrubs is simpler than most folks expect. Begin by removing any dead limbs near the base, then keep the top a touch narrower than the bottom so sunlight can reach the whole plant. Every cut you make opens the door for new growth, which over time fills the shrub out and makes it stronger. Once the structure looks good, feel free to shape it to whatever size and form you have in mind.

When should I fertilize my shrubs?

Timing matters here. If you planted in fall, hold off and feed the following spring; for spring-planted hedges, give them six to eight weeks to settle before their first feeding. A teaspoon of a 16-4-8 or similar high-nitrogen fertilizer worked in around the edges of each planting hole delivers the nutrients shrubs and hedges need to push new growth. For ongoing care, early spring is the ideal time to feed, and an all-purpose slow-release fertilizer sprinkled at the base can carry your plants for up to a year.

Are Shrubs Annuals or Perennials?

Shrubs are woody plants, and because they come back year after year they are considered perennial shrubs. That said, gardeners in colder climates often grow warm-climate shrubs as annuals, so it really comes down to what you want in your garden.

Why Gardeners Buy Shrubs and Hedges from Perfect Plants

When you buy shrubs and hedges from Perfect Plants Nursery, you are buying from an actual grower, not a middleman. We have been raising bushes and hedges on our North Florida farm since 1980, which means the plant that arrives at your door was rooted, potted, and cared for by our own team rather than pulled from a warehouse shelf. That hands-on attention shows up in healthier roots, fuller foliage, and shrubs that establish faster once they are in your ground. Every order is packed with care and backed by growers who actually know these plants, so if you ever have a question about which hedge fits your yard or how to get it settled in, real people with dirt under their nails are here to help. It is the difference between ordering a plant and ordering a plant grown right.

FAQs About Buying Shrubs Online

We always tell our gardeners: the best time to plant is in spring or early fall! These two times of the year offer the perfect balance of mild outdoor temperatures and cool soil conditions to allow a newly transplanted bush to acclimate to it's new home.

This will depend on the shrub you're planting, but a good rule of thumb is in early spring right before the plant begins new growth. Pruning this time of year ensures that the hedge is dormant and when new growth flushes the young branches/foliage won't be hardmed by winter temperatures.

  • If you have questions about your specific bush shoot us an email or give us a call. We're here to help!

They sure do! All plants, including shrubs and hedges, come with our 30-day warranty which kicks in the moment it arrives at your front door. If your shrubs arrive damaged or you're unhappy with your quality, we'll replace your bush. We grow our plants right here on our farm, no middlemen, meaning we stand by when we send out. We want to make sure you find your perfect plant!

Certain shrubs may have slightly different needs, but you can never go wrong with a balanced slow-release plant food or liquid fertilizer. Aim for an NPK of 8-8-8 or 10-10-10 to give your bushes a balance of macro and micro plant nutrients.

For privacy you want to look for a plant that is evergreen and grows to a mature height of at least 6-8 feet tall such as Viburnum or Holly shrubs. This will mimic the height of a wood fence and the evergreen habit will mean you'll block out nosey neighbors all year long.
