Evergreen Holly Produces Red Fruit for the Birds in Winter

This Ilex cultivar, the Needlepoint Holly shrub, will give your landscape a luxurious feel with its lush, deep green leaves and scarlet red fruit—and its fastidious growth means it’ll have your yard a source of envy in no time!

The Needlepoint Holly hedge is a favorite year-round shrub known for its delicate, long narrow, twisted evergreen leaves. The smooth texture of the leaves has a single spine at the tip and heavily produces small creamy white flowers during the spring that later become bright red berries in the middle of fall.

The beautiful red fruit attracts birds and lasts through winter. Use this evergreen bush as a statement piece in your yard because of the contrasting red berries to the dark green foliage.

NEEDLEPOINT HOLLY CARE

The root system stays shallow so it’s a great landscaping plant! This evergreen holly bush requires full sun to partial shade to thrive. It is a self-pollinating holly Ilex cornuta meaning no male and female plants necessary to produce berries.

The Needlepoint Holly growth rate is up to 3 feet tall per year- it grows very rapidly! At full maturity, the needlepoint holly size can grow up to 10-15 feet tall and 5-10 feet wide. This tall evergreen hedge makes the perfect windbreak!

Grow across the United States in USDA growing zones 7-9. This plant does not ship bare root. The best time of year to plant is in the early spring for optimum growth. Dig a hole the size of the root ball. Well-draining soil is the best choice but you can always amend the native soil or use nutrient-rich surrounding soil to backfill when planting. All holly plants will perform tremendously in slightly acidic soil.

Needlepoint holly pruning is only required to maintain the desired shape and size. Spread a layer of mulch on the top of the root zone to maintain moisture during the growing season. It is relatively low maintenance!

This evergreen shrub is a great addition to your landscape as a small tree or shrub, lush screen, border, accent, or foundation plant. It’s heat and drought-tolerant which makes it easy to care for!
