The Drake Chinese Elm Tree, also known as the Drake Elm Tree or Lacebark Elm Tree, is a deciduous tree grown for its shade and semi-evergreen foliage.

Ulmus parvifolia, as it is botanically named, is technically a deciduous tree in most locations but almost considered a semi-evergreen tree in warmer locations because it does not lose all of its shiny leaves over winter. The shiny dark green leaves will transform during autumn to create beautiful fall foliage and shed late in the season.

The Drake evergreen Elm has long, weeping branches that cascade over the thick trunk to create a wide canopy. Drake Elm tree bark is mottled with dark grey and brown colors and exhibits a peeling or exfoliating effect. In the early spring, Elm trees produce small seedpods called samaras that are ornamental and droopy in clusters surrounding the Chinese elm tree leaves.

This fast-growing shade tree is perfectly planted as a specimen tree by streets or sidewalks, front yard tree, or anywhere the shade can be enjoyed. It is also perfect in a city park or parking lot as it is tolerant of urban conditions such as pollution.

DRAKE CHINESE ELM TREE CARE

Grow the Chinese Elm species across the United States in USDA hardiness zones 6-10. It is widely adaptable to a wide range of soil conditions but moist, well-draining soil is preferred. Full sun is best suited for this fast-growing tree but it can tolerate light shade as the landscape tree grows.

The Chinese Drake Elm tree has an upright growth habit with a single trunk and can get up to 40-50 feet tall and 30-40 feet wide at full mature size. It has a growth rate of up to 1-2 feet per year giving it a medium to fast growth rate. Elms are very large trees and are long-lived!

Pick a nice, wide spot to plant your Drake Elm in with plenty of space for it to grow. It will need a regular watering schedule during the first year of planting to establish a strong root system. Drake Elm pruning can take place at almost any time of the year but the best time is in late fall or winter while an older tree has fewer leaves. This will give the person pruning the best view of the branch structure to give the perfect tall tree look!

Some other varieties display Elm tree problems such as Dutch Elm disease, elm leaf beetles, or borers, but the Drake Elm is exceptionally pest and disease resistant. It is drought tolerant once established and will not tolerate wet soils as this can cause root rot.
