Unique, Vibrant Fall Color For This Japanese Maple
This brilliant Acer palmatum Japanese Maple cultivar will truly stop anyone who passes by in their tracks. The acer palmatum Bloodgood tree should be grown as the focal point in your yard – a true statement piece!
After winter, the red-green leaves emerge again in the spring and stay green through summer. As soon as the temperatures start dropping, the leaf color gradually turns a bright scarlet red or can take on many shades of red. Renowned for its beautiful garnet foliage and showy growth habitat, it is a staple in many home landscapes.
This ornamental tree is great for winter landscapes as the red is a nice contrast fall color to the evergreen trees. This fast-growing tree, similar to the Emperor Japanese Maple Tree, is easy to grow and very aesthetically pleasing.
Can You Keep a Bloodgood Japanese Maple Small?
While a Bloodgood Japanese maple tree does not need to be regularly pruned, you can trim and prune the Bloodgood maple tree to help it grow in your preferred shape. The best time to prune a Bloodgood Japanese maple tree is during the winter when the Bloodgood tree is dormant. Though it isn't always necessary, it's a good idea to trim off any diseased, dead, or dying branches.
How Big Do Bloodgood Japanese Maples Get?
A full-grown Bloodgood Japanese Maple can grow between 15 to 25 feet tall and spread to 20 feet wide at full maturity, making it a great choice for a small tree in your landscape.
How Fast Does Japanese Bloodgood Maple Grow?
The Bloodgood Japanese maple growth rate is slow to moderately growing 1-2 feet per year. You can add fertilizer and heavily water the Bloodgood Japanese maple tree to encourage it to grow faster. However, faster growth may result in less desirable branching for the Bloodgood tree so it may be best to have patience and allow it to grow at its own rate.
Bloodgood Japanese Maple Care
The Bloodgood Japanese maple tree is a deciduous tree, meaning it loses its maple leaves in winter. It is grown across the United States in USDA growing zones 5-8.
The tree prefers full sun to part shade and slightly acidic, well-drained soil conditions for best results. Watering is key to ensuring that your Bloodgood Japanese maple tree properly establishes its root system upon initial growth in the first year. Soil moisture should stay damp but no wet feet.
The Japanese Bloodgood maple tree cannot be grown in the hot summer heat, so plant in partial shade if you have exceptionally hot summers to avoid leaf scorch. A slow-release fertilizer at the top of the root ball will help the maple grow.

Unsure this tiny tree will survive
Purchased the 3-4' tree and it arrived approx 8 days after ordering, and safely packaged but a bit dry from transport. Gave it a drink and planted it next day with fertilizer and acidic soil purchased from Perfect Plants as well. Overall, despite the 4' height, the tree is dainty and the trunk is approximately a pencil width even at its base. We have not yet hit the hot summer weather and the tree is struggling a bit where the lower leaves have all died and dropped off. Does have some "fresh growth" at top, but that is also attracting grasshoppers to munch on them and I fight them off multiple times per day. I plan to cover the tree with netting to see if that helps tomorrow. I do hope this lil' guy makes it. Time will tell.
Underdeveloped
I order through Home Depot and received a much smaller tree than was shown on the website. Yes it was 4”, but the thin trunk and undeveloped canopy did not meet the expectations. See photo. Shipped well and healthy. HD gave me a partial refund rather than making me send it back. I’m probably better off buying from the store or a local nursery.

I LOVE THIS TREE
This lovely tree arrived healthy and in good shape, even though the delivery person laid it on it's side on the porch - specifically marked with a big arrow showing it should be standing up. It didn't seem to matter, though, because it was healthy and strong and doing well in my front yard so far.
Perfect Plants Nursery
Hey there, fellow plant lover! I'm absolutely thrilled to hear that you're loving your new Bloodgood Japanese Maple tree – that's maple-ous news! And how amazing that it arrived healthy and in good shape, despite the delivery person's minor mishap of laying it down on its side. It's like your tree was all, "I may be on my side, but I'm still as strong and healthy as can be!"
Unsure
This tree has been in the ground for weeks and so far no sign of growth. I’m a bit concerned.
