Shape Up Your Landscape with the Baby Gem Boxwood

The Buxus Baby Gem Boxwood evergreen shrub is ideal for your landscape if you want perfect shrubs with clean lines.

This kind of Boxwood is often used for hedges and topiaries because they’re easy to keep shaped with frequent pruning. They also make beautiful container plants since they’re compact.

Boxwood Baby Gem has small glossy leaves that are a medium shade of green. The plant is evergreen if grown in the appropriate climate, so you can enjoy its green foliage all year long.

They’re a great addition to flower beds or used around foundations. Boxwoods are great in gardens because they’re deer resistant, so you’ll have one less thing to have chewed up in your yard.

Buxus Baby Gem Boxwood Care

The Baby Gem Boxwood is best suited for hardiness zones 5-9. They can tolerate some cold and heat, but extended periods of either can stress the plant and cause them to lose their leaves or die in the winter or summer. In hot climates, it’s best to provide afternoon shade to give the plant a break, and if you live in hardiness zones 4 or below, this plant will need to be brought inside, or it will die.

Full sun is recommended for the Baby Gem Boxwood, but it can tolerate partial shade if necessary. If you’re growing it in a climate that receives extended periods of extreme heat, afternoon shade will be best to prevent the plant from heat stress.

Young and newly transplanted shrubs will need moist soil, but once the plants are established after about three months, you can allow the top of the soil to dry out between watering because Boxwood is drought tolerant. If you can’t consistently water your shrubs, provide them with afternoon shade.

Baby Gem Boxwoods aren’t demanding when it comes to soil, which is one of the reasons why gardeners love them so much! Make sure the soil is well-draining to prevent water from puddling around the roots. Aim for a neutral soil pH level, and that’s all you need to think about for the soil.

Fertilize your Boxwoods once in early spring with a slow-release fertilizer or compost to keep the growth looking its best.

Baby Gem Boxwood Size

These shrubs will grow to be 4 feet tall and 4-5 feet wide. Frequent pruning will allow you to keep this plant smaller if you’d like. You can also shape it as a topiary. The plant looks beautiful when you allow it to grow freely, so you can let it do what it wants if you have the space for it.

Baby Gem Boxwood Pruning Requirements

Pruning isn’t necessary, but it will undoubtedly make these shrubs look stunning! You can trim long branches as needed or prune the entire plant to keep its shape. Many gardeners love rounded Boxwoods and shape them to look like perfect spheres. You can also prune them to be boxy, triangular, or spiral. The lush growth of Boxwoods allows you to play around with the shapes, so you can take some creative liberties with this plant.
