Full sun is required for the best berry production but partial shade can be tolerated in warmer climates to help protect against the afternoon sun. Blackberry bushes prefer well-draining soil that is slightly acidic and rich in nutrients.

The mature size of the Navaho blackberry is up to 4-6 feet tall and 3-5 feet wide. Navaho thornless blackberry trellis is not required but may help to keep the plant growing vertically and free up space in your garden. The canes are semi-erect and will grow upwards if given support.

How to Plant Navaho Blackberry

As soon as you receive your plant, you should take it out of the box and give it a good watering. Dig a hole at least double the size of the root ball. Place the blackberry root ball into the planting hole and backfill with native or amended soil like our Fruit Tree Planting Mix or Acidic Potting Soil. Press firmly down to compress the soil and cover the root zone with mulch or organic matter to help retain moisture. Water thoroughly right afterward and for the first year of planting to establish a strong root system.

Annual fertilizer like our Slow Release Fertilizer will help provide the blackberry plants with the nutrients they need to produce loads of sweet fruit!

How to Prune Navaho Blackberry

Navaho blackberries should be pruned annually to increase shield and keep the plant looking neat and clean. After the plant has finished fruiting, cut back the canes that produced fruit that year to ground level. Blackberries only produce fruit on new canes from last year’s growth. During any time of the year, you can prune backcrossed branches or unhealthy-looking branches.

Not just a transaction

I ordered a blue berries and blackberries. Then I read the cooperative extension's instructions for planting them. I need to prepare the soil well in advance, especially for the blue berries. I asked to cancel my order -- made of course right at Christmas time. It was too late. Nikki contacted me right away and is helping with soil amendments and advice, so the plants can live and thrive -- Thank you Nikki
