An Easy-Care Compact Red Daylily With Bright Yellow Centers That Re-Blooms Throughout The Summer
Tired of daylilies that bloom for a couple of short weeks and quit? Want something different than traditional plain yellow? Check out our red re-blooming hemerocallis Pardon Me Daylily shrub.
These compact daylilies are a great perennial to supply deep, red wine color and beauty to your garden bed. Easy to grow and care for, they are the perfect solution for those who don’t have a lot of time to tend their garden but still want flowers in the yard.
Daylily ‘Pardon Me’ makes a sensational mass planting along the foundation of a house or garage and looks impressive as a mass planting in your perennial garden. Bees and hummingbirds love bell-shaped flowers.
As an added bonus, many gardeners find this particular red daylily to be rabbit resistant, a massive plus if those long-eared garden nibblers are creating problems in your yard.
Pardon Me Daylily Bloom Time
Beginning in early summer, you will see clusters of huge blooms! Like their name says, individual daylily flowers only last about a day. However, this red daylily plant keeps sending up more flowers, and re-blooming periods in the fall are common in warmer areas.
The double ‘Pardon Me’ daylily is drought and somewhat salt tolerant once established. It works as an effective ground cover for sunny, drier, lower fertility areas and slopes that need some plants to hold the soil in place. Once they are established, you can enjoy dark green foliage and burgundy-red blooms with golden centers without needing extensive attention and maintenance.
‘Pardon Me’ is the easy way to bring big-time color to your yard without all the work. But you don’t have to tell anyone how effortless it was.
Pardon Me Daylily Care Information
‘Pardon Me’ is hardy to USDA zones 3-9 and tolerates heat quite well.
This compact daylily grows best in full or partial sun. If planted in areas with less than 4 hours per day of sun, it may grow and bloom less.
‘Pardon Me’ daylily will grow in most soils and is not picky about pH levels. It prefers to be moist but not soggy. If grown in excessively wet areas, ‘Pardon Me’ will survive but may not flower often.
Water deeply and frequently for the first six weeks after planting, then weekly as needed for the rest of the first growing season after transplanting. Once they are well-established, they should require little care and only need watering during extended dry periods.
This red daylily will grow without supplemental fertilizing, but you can give it an annual feeding of a slow-release general-purpose fertilizer once per spring to encourage growth.
Pardon Me Daylily Height And Width
‘Pardon Me’ clumps will be 1-2 feet tall and slowly spread by underground rhizomes until the cluster is about 2 feet wide. They stay more manageable than traditional daylilies.
‘Pardon Me’ should not need pruning beyond removing spent flower stalks (deadheading) for appearance’s sake. It can be divided every 3-4 years to maintain plant vigor and root growth.
