Excellent Ground Cover Grows Quick To Cover Spaces In Your Garden
Youngstown Andorra Juniper is an ornamental & evergreen shrub that is beloved for its unusual growth habit, wildlife value, and year-round seasonal hardiness.
Juniper Andorra is also known as Youngstown Juniper or Plumosa Juniper. It is a low-growing compact evergreen shrub. It makes an excellent groundcover and can be used in ZEN-inspired retreats or rustic gardens.
In spring, this shrub features bright green foliage that grows on woody branches near the ground. Through summer, its finely textured scale-like leaves deepen into a shade of blue-green. Winter, however, brings an unexpected surprise. During the colder months, the compact Andorra Juniper displays attractive plumb-colored foliage with copperish highlights! Birds enjoy this plant and use it as a retreat from the cold.
This shrub is a conifer and does not get flowers. In spring, it may produce tiny berry-like cones if it is a female plant. Birds and other wildlife depend upon its fleshy seed cones for food through winter.
How to Use Andorra Juniper in the Garden
Juniper compact Andorra makes an excellent groundcover, foundation plant, and/or specimen plant. This compact low-growing shrub is also great for erosion control. It looks amazing as it gracefully cascades over rocks and down sloped terrain.
Additionally, this groundcover provides an attractive accent at the base of trees or tall shrubs like Rose of Sharon, so long as it gets adequate sunlight. However, avoid planting this perennial groundcover near apple or crabapple trees. These trees can cause cedar-apple rust, which is a kind of fungal disease.
Compact Andorra Care Information
This low-growing shrub is drought tolerant, deer resistant, can handle salt, and is impervious to urban pollution. It has no significant pests or diseases. Andorra Juniper grows best in USDA hardiness zones 3 through 9. It is extremely cold-hardy and reliable.
Plant your Andorra Juniper in full sun. It needs at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily. It fails to thrive if planted in the shade. Water this juniper occasionally once it is established, or more often in extreme heat and prolonged drought conditions.
Andorra Juniper tolerates variable soil but prefers loam and sand. Well-draining soil is essential. Provide mulch around the base, especially when first establishing, as it will help this shrub retain moisture. Fertilize with all-purpose plant food, as needed.
Andorra Juniper Size
This unique evergreen only grows to about 6 to 20 inches tall! From there, it spreads out and has a width of 5 to 6 feet! This special growing habit makes it ideal as a ground cover. Andorra Juniper spacing should be at least 5 feet apart. Expect to enjoy this shrub for 30 years.
This compact shrub seldom needs pruning. To shape and trim back the plant, prune it in late winter before new spring growth emerges.

Youngstown Juniper
The three plants arrived quickly and in perfect condition; the packaging was very sturdy. They are now happily planted in their bed. These plants were difficult to find in my area of Washington. I was told they were an older plant -- which was the point as I live in a small, 1907 Craftsman style home. Thank you so much for having these plants! I will be back.
