This Miscanthus Adagio grass cultivar gives the feel of being on the beach watching the waves roll in with its lazy, large leaves and feathery flower plumes! It is also known as Japanese silver grass for its silvery green leaves.

The Adagio is a dwarf eulalia grass cultivar and is the most petite of the many Miscanthus grass shrub cultivars. It is a clump-forming ornamental grass that features slender, silvery blades that turn yellow in the fall time.

The Miscanthus Sinensis Adagio plant’s tiny white-pink plumes appear in tassel-like florets above the silver-green foliage later in mid to late summer. The bronze pink flower tassels rise above the foliage and gradually fade to creamy white by fall as the seed heads mature. Both the leaves and the blooms last well into winter on this plant.

ADAGIO DWARF MAIDEN GRASS CARE

The Adagio grass enjoys average, medium, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade. However, it is tolerant in a wide range of soils, from well-drained sandy soils to heavier clays and fertile moist soils.

If this plant lives in extremely shady areas, it will grow less vigorous with decreased flowering and has a tendency to flop. It’s tolerant of summer heat and humidity. Plus, this shrub is deer resistant so you don’t have to worry about wildlife eating them.

The dwarf maiden grass thrives across the United States in USDA growing zones 6-9. It is a warm-season grass and is often found in coastal areas because of its salt tolerance.

It keeps its bladed silvery white grass appearance throughout all seasons. If left standing through fall, the grass has fall colors of orange-gold and eventually fades to white. Perfect choice if you are looking for winter interest in your landscape or small garden!

The dwarf Miscanthus Adagio maiden grass only grows up to 3-4 feet tall and wide which makes it perfect for mass plantings. Water deeply during the first year of planting to get healthy growth started.

The best time to plant miscanthus grass is in early spring so it has the whole growing season to establish. The fine textured Chinese silver grass is easily grown and a delight to the eye. Cut foliage commonly appears in wreaths, bouquets, or flower centerpieces.
