The Ouachita thornless blackberry vine features an upright habitat with double blossoms and semi-erect canes that bears fruit of medium size. Fruit is firm and sweet. The full crop fruiting season will begin to ripen in June and the berries appear in early spring. This blackberry cultivar is disease-resistant and heat tolerant making it an ideal choice for warmer climates in the south.

The fruit storage and handling potential make this berry plant a great choice for home gardeners. Bred by the University of Arkansas, this blackberry variety is one of our favorites for the excellent flavor and handling potential of the Ouachita.

Growing Thornless Blackberry Vines

The Ouachita Blackberry vine is self-pollinating and prefers full sun and loamy, well-drained soil. Its fruit is deliciously large, sweet berries with black skin, and a firm texture. It requires around 400 chill hours.

Harvest these berries in mid-June – this summer fruit producers can keep producing for 5 weeks after that. The fruiting extends through the late summer growing season. Giving you more time to enjoy this delicious fruit!

Plant blackberries across the United States in USDA hardiness zones 6-9. This summer bearing blackberry plants love the heat! Can also be grown in a raised bed if there is enough room for roots to grow or even patio grown in a container.

How to Trellis Blackberries

Grown great as Ouachita Blackberry trellis system with plenty of feet of row. Saves space, improves efficiency when picking, controls plant size, and improves insect/disease problems – just a few of the many benefits of growing blackberries on a trellis. The erect blackberries on the fruiting canes will cling onto the trellis whether it be wire or wood.

These fruit bushes will get up to 4-5 feet tall and 3-4 feet wide at full size. You may need to prune long canes to the desired size and shape. Plants will produce root suckers at the base of the plant as it spreads. Blackberry plants grow quickly and they require 1-2 inches of water per week when the plant is in its fruiting stages.

Shipped rooted in soil in a pot (not bare root). You will see the difference in fruit quality. Blackberry plants are easy to grow – you will not be disappointed.

FAQs for Ouachita Blackberry Bush

Ouachita blackberries are easy to grow and a great choice for home gardeners. They are self-pollinating and perform best in full sun, where they’ll produce the best crops. Plant them in loamy, well-drained soil and water regularly during the first growing season to establish strong roots. Once established, Ouachita blackberries are relatively low maintenance and known for their excellent disease resistance. Perfect Plants ships healthy, well-rooted plants ready to thrive in your garden.

Ouachita blackberry plants should be spaced about 4-6 feet apart. This spacing allows good air circulation, easier harvesting, and room for the plants to mature without overcrowding. Proper spacing also helps reduce disease pressure and encourages larger, more productive harvests over time.

Yes, Ouachita blackberry bushes are perennials, meaning they return every year. While individual canes may die back after fruiting (and should be pruned), the plant itself continues to produce new canes from the clump that will fruit in future seasons. With basic pruning and care, you can enjoy reliable harvests for many years.

Ouachita blackberries are considered one of the best thornless blackberry varieties available. They produce large, glossy berries with a balanced sweet-tart flavor that’s excellent for fresh eating. Gardeners also appreciate their firm texture, high yields, and dependable performance in a wide range of growing conditions.
