What Are The Best Plum Tree Varieties to Buy Online

Flowering plum trees grow in a wide variety of planting sites and soil conditions. Different kinds of plum tree varieties require all types of full sun exposure. Make sure you pick the right variety for your space and planting site.

Some plum tree varieties are self pollinating but will produce a better crop if planted with other fruit trees for maximum cross pollination. The showy white plum flowers will entice pollinators such as bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds.

The Methley Plum is an excellent choice for the northern United States as it can grow fruitfully up to USDA plant hardiness zone 5.

The Santa Rosa Plum is an excellent Japanese plum cultivar for sweet tasting fruit that is easy to grow.

The Golden Plum Tree is a unique fruit tree to add due to the yellow colored fruit. It is extremely cold hardy and heat tolerant, and can grow across most of the United States.

The Scarlet Beauty Plum has low chill hours and prefers the warmth of the South. With a small mature size, it is great for small yards or even containers!

The Fruit Cocktail Tree is a unique tree that offers multiple fruits on one tree! The fruits it grows are plums, peaches, and nectarines.

Caring For Plum Trees Your Ordered Online

When planting plum trees, be sure to choose a planting site that suits the plum tree's needs. Dig a hole at least twice the size of the root ball. Take the plum tree out of the nursery container and loosen up the root ball to prepare for being planted in the ground. Be sure to level out the top of the root ball with the ground level. Do not want the plum trees planted too deep. Backfill with native soil or amended soil such as our Fruit Tree Planting Mix to give the tree good quality, humus rich soil filled with nutrients to jumpstart their life in the ground. Water thoroughly during the first few weeks of planting to establish a strong root system. Cover the root zone with mulch to help retain moisture.

Growing plum trees is easy as long as you give them the care they need. Plum trees prefer at least 6-8 hours of full sun, well draining soil that has been kept consistently moist during the active growing seasons of spring and summer. We recommend buying a grafted plum tree for best results as some plums grown by seed are not of the same quality as a grafted tree.
