All About Endless Summer® Hydrangeas

Hydrangea Endless Summer® varieties earn their name. Traditional hydrangeas bloom once in the spring or summer for several weeks. The Hydrangea macrophylla Endless Summer® line will make a second showing later in the year, which can last into early autumn.

These hydrangeas are hybrids of H. macrophylla. Endless Summer® hydrangea shrubs are sometimes called mophead hydrangea shrubs, meaning their blooms are large, round, and full. They are cold-hardy and easy to grow in garden beds or containers. Many colors and sizes are available.

Endless Summer® hydrangeas are also stunning in fall and turn shades of bronze, burgundy, and orange before taking a nap for the winter.

How to Landscape Endless Summer® Hydrangeas You Bought Online in the Garden

Endless Summer hydrangeas are excellent focal plants in perennial garden beds. Their long blooming time can provide color while other plants are fading out. They are a perfect choice for plantings at the corners of your house or garage or to jazz up your mailbox or porch. A pair of Endless Summer Bloomstruck® hydrangeas make excellent colorful sentinels for the end of your driveway.

Hydrangeas make awe-inspiring mass plantings, and Endless Summer® is even better as the color lasts all season. A row of Summer Crush® planted along the deck or front porch is stunning.

How To Grow Endless Summer® Hydrangea In Pots

You can also grow Endless Summer® hydrangeas in pots or large containers. They will grow well in larger pots and planters and can add a great splash of color. Bring them inside for the winter if your growing zone is too cold to leave them outside.

Endless Summer® Hydrangea Care

The optimal amount of sunshine these hydrangeas like is dependent on your location. Gardeners in the northern section of the range, say in USDA zones 4 and 5, can plant Endless Summer® where it will receive full morning sun and dappled afternoon shade. Gardeners in zones 8 and 9 will do well to select a location with only a few hours of full sunlight.

Loamy, organic soil is what Endless Summer® hydrangeas enjoy. Consider making raised beds to plant these hydrangeas if your site has poor drainage. For plants like Endless Summer Blue® and Endless Summer Bloomstruck®, soils with pH below 6.0 will cause blue blooms, and alkaline soils will cause your hydrangea to shift to red.

When Do Endless Summer® Hydrangeas Bloom?

Endless Summer® hydrangea shrubs traditionally bloom once early in the spring and a second time in the late summer. Unlike other hydrangea plants, Endless Summer® hydrangeas will bloom from both new and old wood during the second bloom.

Endless Summer® Hydrangea Pruning

Like other Bigleaf varieties, these hydrangeas flower on old wood. But, the Endless Summer® line will also bloom on new wood later in the summer. They do not need pruning but can be pruned to keep their shape and remove dead or broken branches. Deadheading can be done in late winter.

Keep in mind that pruning may remove some flower buds. Heavy pruning is often the reason for the lack of blooms later in the year.

Should you Cut Back Endless Summer® Hydrangeas in the Fall?

You should not prune your Endless Summer® hydrangea shrubs late in the fall as they may still be in their second bloom cycle. These plants don’t need to be pruned unless there is evidence of dead stems. These stems can be cut down near the base to encourage new growth.
