If you love bright red-pink flowers and chocolate-red foliage, then the Stewartstonian Azalea shrub’s vivacious personality is just what you need! Throughout all four seasons, this flowering shrub really puts on a splendid show.

Azalea Stewartstonian is a broadleaf evergreen shrub. It is also a Gable hybrid and was developed in Stewartstonian, Pennsylvania. It offers a wide range of colors and is a lovely plant to watch as it changes through each season.

Rhododendron Stewartstonian Azalea is mainly celebrated for its spring flowers, but late fall and winter bring a lovely surprise. Its dark evergreen leaves transition into a rich chocolate-red color during the colder months.

Older leaves may shed during the colder weather, only to be replaced with fresh reddish-brown leaves that create ongoing seasonal interest. In spring, new growth is a cheerful bright green color. Stems are a deep scarlet red and contrast nicely against the green foliage.

The vivid flowers of evergreen Azalea Stewartstonian start blooming in April and last into the fall! They grow profusely and tend to cover the entire shrub. Its clustering blossoms display a striking red-pink color that attracts hummingbirds and butterflies! Spent blooms can be pruned to encourage new flowering. However, new flowers will bloom on old wood.

How to Use Stewartstonian Azalea in Your Garden

This pink azalea bush does wonders as a stewartstonian azalea hedge or border shrub and is sure to make your yard look stunning. As a shade-loving plant, it does well in woodland shade gardens. Of course, it can also be placed in large pots and used to decorate your porch or patio area. When placing your azalea, keep in mind that it will likely live up to 40 years.

Stewartstonian Azalea Care Information

Stewartstonian Azalea may be susceptible to aphids, borers, mites, caterpillars, nematodes, and other pests. If a pest outbreak occurs, simply apply insecticidal soap or a pesticide. However, the best measure is prevention. Healthy plants seldom suffer. This shrub also tolerates rabbits.

Preferably plant Stewartstonian Azalea in a location that is protected from strong winter winds. Avoid planting in areas near certain nut-bearing trees like butternuts, pecans, hickories, or walnuts. These trees produce toxins that can harm azaleas.

Stewartstonian Azalea grows best in USDA hardiness zones 5 through 8 and is a great cold-weather azalea.

This shrub enjoys living life in partial shade. Open shade with dappled sunlight is best. Morning sun with afternoon shade is another option. In colder climates, Stewartstonian Azalea can tolerate more sun.

This plant does exceptionally well on the north or east side of buildings, embankments, and terraced garden beds.

Stewartstonian Azalea prefers acidic soil with a pH of 5 to 5.5. It also needs well-draining soil. Consistently saturated soils may lead to root rot. Therefore, keep the soil somewhat moist, but do not overwater.

It is also advisable to never let the roots dry out completely. Stewartstonian Azalea produces shallow and fibrous roots. Mulch around the base of the plant to protect these sensitive roots and retain moisture. Pine needles, peat moss, and wood chips are excellent choices for this plant.

To avoid root crowding, it is best to sufficiently space plants apart. If plants are too close, they may compete for nutrients. Regularly fertilize Stewartstonian Azalea with compost and an acidifying amendment.

Stewartstonian Azalea Size

This flowering wonder grows from 4 to 5 feet tall and wide. Plus, it has a dense and low-spreading growth habit.

Stewartstonian Azalea Pruning

It is best to prune Stewartstonian Azalea in the fall after flowering. Pruning not only helps shape the plant but will improve air circulation within the foliage.
