Vertical Trees With Fast Growth Rate & Evergreen Foliage

The Italian Cypress tree (cypress Cupressus sempervirens) also known as the Tuscan Cypress takes on a narrow, columnar form and tidy, well-groomed appearance without any pruning. This makes it a unique low maintenance evergreen.  This cypress evergreen tree features exceptionally dense blue-green foliage with scale like leaves that lend a very fine texture to any landscape setting.

It is well suited to topiaries, large pots or containers, entryways or anywhere you desire to have vertical appeal. This tree is adaptable to many settings and will provide a plant that grows very tall in a short time and can handle hot dry weather. The Italian cypress plant can enhance curb appeal in your landscape.

At times the tall height of this tree can be challenging to fit within residential landscapes. The Italian Cypress tree is best suited for framing, as a strong accent around large buildings, or informal landscape. It is a great choice for a wind blocking tree and is long living!

The tree can grow up to 30 to 40 feet tall; the Italian Cypress growth rate is up to 1-2 feet per year. The dark green tree grows narrowly and maintains 3-5 feet wide. Never prune the height of your Italian Cypress tree until it reaches your desired height. Don’t fret, it establishes quickly and you will have a tall tree in no time! The fast growth rate is ideal if you are looking for tree height fast.

The Blue Italian Cypress grows and thrives in acidic, well-drained soil with full sun, and is deer resistant. The Mediterranean cypress can tolerate a wide range of soil types.

Newly planted cypress can benefit from adding a slow release fertilizer to the planted tree once a year. Although it is drought tolerant once established, be sure to water your fast growing tree thoroughly during the first few years to establish a strong root system.

The tree may lose its green color if it not being watered properly. The needles will turn brown. Italian cypress roots travel deep into the ground so choose your planting spot with care.

Make sure soil is well draining – this tree does not like wet soils and may be susceptible to root rot. To properly care for italian cypress, it is a good idea to pick a proper planting site and soil that retains moisture.

Planting Italian Cypress Trees

Plant Italian Cypress in the United States Department of Agriculture growing zones 7-10. This tall screen tree cannot withstand freezing temperatures for too long. It will turn the gray green leaves brown and if left can kill the tall narrow tree. You can also check out our Evergreen Tree Grow Guide for more information on planting evergreens.

This is a fire resistant tree and it is also resistant to pests and diseases like spider mites. Shake off excess dirt from root ball before planting to encourage new growth.

Shipping information

Once your Italian Cypress Tree order is placed, we will ship your plant(s) within seven business days year round unless during the checkout process you request otherwise in the space provided to do so.

Perfect Plants’ shipping specialists carefully package your plants using a proven packaging method that ensures your plants arrive healthy, colorfully alive and ready to flourish. We’ve coined the term ‘upside down box test’ and we do just that; we carefully package so that regardless of the direction your box is handled, it will not harm your precious plant that’s inside.

No shipping process is without a problem from time to time. On rare occasions some plants may experience some of the following during their transit: drooping, minor leaf-loss and/or minimal yellowing/discoloration, minor limb damage, etc. These instances are quite rare, but can happen when shipping plants in boxes.

Plants normally recover within a few weeks after planting. If a damaged box has injured your plant on the inside, please notify us within 5 days of receiving you package(s) by emailing us a photograph of the damage.

We always do our very best to ensure that your plants are packed and shipped in the safest, gentlest and most effective way possible.

Will my plants and trees look like the photographs?

Absolutely! Unlike other online nurseries, our photos are of actual plants and trees we’ve grown here, on our family operated nursery.

Growing our own plants and trees helps to ensure we ship you the best quality plants that are free of pests and diseases.

Your plants and trees may however not ship with flowers on them, like the photographs. This all depends on the time of year you buy your plant or tree. Crape Myrtle trees, for example, only bloom during the summer months, so if you purchase one during the spring or fall, they would ship without flowers. Once planted, your plants will grow and thrive giving you flowers for many years to come!

Pot Sizes

Pot sizes (commonly referred to in gallons) are shipped in the same size nursery trade pots which may vary in actual volume. Some plants may have been at the approximate pot size listed, but require excess dirt to be removed so that you will not be paying any additional shipping costs. This doesn’t happen very often though.

Shipping Fees

Our shipping charges are based on the value of your order.  Please use the chart below to see what your shipping charge will be.

The Italian Cypress needs full sun or partial shade and a planting site that allows clearance for its towering height. They prefer fast-draining, sandy and ideally slightly acidic soils. They do not tolerate heavy, soggy soils well. They are very drought tolerant, but need occasional watering until established.

The Italian Cypress maintains its narrow, columnar shape naturally and requires very little pruning. Any dead or damaged branches should be removed at their base. However, new growth may not sprout in these areas so avoid planting where the tree may interfere with a structure that would necessitate pruning, etc.

It is most ideal to plant these trees in the fall or winter, during their dormant period of increased root growth. Drooping branches or yellowing from the bottom or inside of the Cypress may indicate that they are receiving too much water. Browning at the top of the tree may indicate that they are not receiving enough water.

Dig a hole approximately twice as wide as your new plant’s root ball and deep enough so that the top of the root ball is equal with the ground level.

Loosen the root ball using a small garden spade or by hand. Breaking smaller outer roots can encourage growth into the new soil, but take care to not damage large primary roots.

Place the plant in the hole and ensure that it is situated evenly upright. Use the excavated soil to fill in around the root ball, using your foot to pack it in firmly. Thoroughly soak with a hose as you fill in the dirt. Take great care to not leave any gaps or air spaces around the root ball as this could kill the plant.

A 2-4 inch layer of mulch is strongly recommended to help retain moisture and discourage weed growth. Apply mulch over the entire planting area but keep away from the stems or trunk by a few inches. Ensure that the plant and surrounding soil is completely soaked with water.

To ensure the proper nutrients are available for the life of your Italian Cypress, our proprietary Perfect Plants Special Blend Soil and a once yearly application of Nutricote Total 360 Fertilizer are great considerations for your new plants!
