This Holly-like Shrub Will Brighten Up Your Landscape

The Goshiki variety of Osmanthus (Osmanthus heterophyllus ‘Goshiki’) is nothing short of stunning, and you’ll undoubtedly want to plant this beauty in your yard. Its pointed leaves resemble a holly bush and have a leathery texture. Sometimes called Osmanthus Goshiki False Holly, it's a great addition to any landscape.

New growth on the Osmanthus Goshiki shrub is pink, but it matures into a sophisticated green with yellow, white, and gold splotches. These beautiful leaves are evergreen if the climate is warm enough, making it a treat to look at all year long.

Osmanthus Goshiki False Holly will develop small white blooms in late summer and early fall but are hidden by the leaves, so you likely won’t see them unless you’re looking for them.

This Goshiki Holly Osmanthus is eye-catching when planted alone in your landscape or a container, but you can plant several of them near each other to form a privacy hedge. However you choose to use them, Osmanthus Goshiki false hollies are sure to make a statement in your garden.

Is Osmanthus Goshiki Deer Resistant?

The leaves of the Osmanthus Goshiki are not usually a deer’s preferred snack. Similar to leaves of the holly, the Goshiki false holly leaves are sharp and veiny compared to other plant leaves that may be more appetizing.

Does Osmanthus Goshiki Grow in Shade?

Osmanthus Goshiki grows best in full sun or partial shade, depending on your climate. If you live in an area with hot summers, plant Osmanthus where it can receive shade in the afternoon. If you live in a cold area, the plant may die back in the winter or die completely, depending on how cold it gets. You can bring your Osmanthus Goshiki shrub indoors or heavily mulch it and cover it to protect it from harsh temperatures.

The Osmanthus Goshiki shrub thrives in full sun in temperate climates. If summer brings consistent extreme temperatures where you live, you’ll need to provide your plant afternoon shade, whether from a nearby tree or a shade cloth.

Too much shade in cool or temperate areas is a bad thing and will result in leggy growth, so make sure your shrub will get enough light.

Goshiki False Holly Care

The Goshiki Osmanthus thrives in hardiness zones 6-9. It doesn’t like extremely hot and cold temperatures, so it’s best suited for a temperate climate.

Osmanthus is drought tolerant once well established, but young plants and extreme temperatures will cause the plant to need more water. Try to keep the soil consistently moist, but don’t allow the soil to be wet or soggy.

Goshiki Osmanthus is tolerant of most soil types like heavy clay, loam, or sand. If you can choose the soil available, aim for something rich in nutrients and well-draining. The shrub won’t require much fertilizing, so applying slow-release fertilizer or compost once or twice a year should be enough for it if you can start with rich soil.

Osmanthus Goshiki Size

The plant typically grows 5 to 10 feet tall and 4 to 8 feet wide. You can prune it to keep it relatively small or allow it to grow freely to create a remarkable centerpiece in your landscape.

How Far Apart to Plant Osmanthus Goshiki

If you’re planning to buy Osmanthus Goshiki to create a hedge in your backyard or garden, you’ll want to keep them close enough to have some overlap. Plant your osmanthus false hollies about 4 feet apart to let your shrubs grow thick for privacy.

How Fast Does Osmanthus Goshiki Grow?

Osmanthus Goshiki False Hollies are relatively slow growers, taking up to ten years to reach their full sizes. Depending on where you plant your shrub, it may only grow 6 to 10 inches a year.

Osmanthus Goshiki Pruning Requirements

Goshiki Osmanthus is a fairly compact shrub, but it may grow rapidly with the right amount of water and sunlight. If you want the shrub to maintain a compact and uniform size, you can trim new growth on your Osmanthus shrub to encourage the plant to keep a bushy growth habit rather than forming long stems.

You can also trim your Osmanthus Goshiki to a specific height or shape if you’re forming a hedge with multiple plants. If you don’t mind letting the plant grow how it wants to, pruning isn’t necessary for the plant to be happy.
