Red Fuji Apple Tree Pollination

Red Fuji apple trees are not self pollinators, so you’ll need to pair them with another variety to ensure a bountiful harvest. Be sure to pick pollination partners in the same flowering group as your variety. Meaning, the variety of apple trees flower at the same time, therefore, having highly compatible cross pollination. The Fuji is in flowering group 4. Read about fruit tree pollination and check out our apple tree pollination chart to help choose which tree you’d like to pair with your red Fujis. Does require another apple tree variety as good pollinators for fuji. The best Fuji apple pollinators are Red Delicious, Golden Delicious, and Granny Smith apples. You can even use a flowering crab apple tree to pollinate fruiting varieties.

Red Fuji Apple Tree Size

The Fuji Apple Tree growth rate is moderately fast, growing 12-24 inches per year as young trees. At full size, a red fuji apple tree can reach heights of up to 20 feet tall with 10-15 feet wide branch span. Grows best in USDA plant hardiness zones 5-9. This is not a semi- dwarf sized apple tree. It will start producing apples at a very early age which is one of the reasons why it’s our favorite apple variety for home grown fruit!

How to Prune a Fuji Apple Tree

Pruning a red fuji apple tree is much like pruning any other fruit tree. It’s best to prune your tree at least once each year to provide room for further growth. Remove dead branches from your apple tree around the top and sides to improve its health and further extend its life. We recommend fully pruning your red fuji apple trees in the winter, when they’re dormant. If you see a damaged or diseased branch during any other season of the year, it’s still best to remove it right away. Learn more about proper pruning with our apple tree growing guide.

How long does it take a Fuji apple tree to bear fruit?

The Red Fuji apple tree bears fruit after about 3 years of planting. Once fully matured, your red fuji apple trees will each have a harvest of up to 200 apples per year. That’s 200 apples for snacks, desserts and gifts to family and friends. Enjoy the crisp sweet taste in no time!

This cultivar produces large to medium sized apples that are firm and crunchy, and feature an aesthetic red-green skin. The red color can vary on apples depending on your planting location. The creamy white flesh of this tree’s fruit will delight the senses and is of extremely high quality.

The deciduous apple tree produces yellow green leaves that will fall to the ground in late fall or early winter. Once early spring hits, the tree’s leaves will flush out after the apple blooms appear. The leaves and fruit will be full on growing once late spring and early summer arrive.

Fuji Apple Tree Climate

The Fuji apple tree is exceptionally heat tolerant, making it an ideal apple cultivar for southern summers in the lower growing zones. The Fuji trees ripen in mid-September; fuji apple fruits are ready to pick later in the growing season. The apple bloom time is between mid to late spring.  This Red Fuji apple tree variety requires 350-400 chill hours and a pollinizer.

Growing Fuji Apple Trees in the Home Garden

This apple tree can thrive in a wide range of soil types but prefers well-drained soil. Plant the tree in full sunlight. Be sure to water well the first year of planting to establish a strong root system. This plant is exceptionally pest and disease resistant but once it starts producing fruit a slow release fertilizer will help. Fuji trees are especially resistant to apple scab.

The apple tree is growing great. I got exactly what I wanted. I bought a bare root tree before this and knew for my next purchase I wanted a rooted tree so it would not have transplant shock. Will be purchasing more next year.
