This LSU Purple fig tree was produced in 1991 after many trials and errors to perfect this succulent fig tree! Feast your taste buds on the deliciously lush purple ficus carica fig! Named after the iconic fig breeding program at Louisiana State University that has been around since the 1950s.

The LSU Fig tree features a closed eye, medium-sized fruit with white juicy flesh, and strawberry-colored insides with high sugar content. This highly productive fig cultivar is a vigorous grower with an upright habitat. The dark purple fresh figs taste deliciously sweet and are sure to invigorate your senses.

Planting LSU Fig Trees

The LSU Purple Fig is exceptionally pest and disease resistant and is also self-pollinating. This fig variety is heat tolerant and prefers full sun and loamy, well-drained soil. Purple fig fruit will begin to ripen in July and continue through frost.

Grow this fast growing fig tree in USDA growing zones 7-10 across the United States. If you are in an exceptionally cold area, you may want to winter protect this fruit tree by planting it in a container on your patio.

The best time to plant a fig is in early spring so it has the whole growing season to establish. You can even grow this fig tree in a container if limited in space. LSU fig will set fruit in the first year of planting.

How to Care for an LSU Fig Tree

Other planting care instructions include: a 2-3 inch layer of mulch or organic matter that will help retain moisture and save the young trees from winter frosts. During the growing season, a slow-release fertilizer at the top of the root ball will help the fruit set and root systems to grow strong.

The LSU fig tree height can grow up to 8-10 feet tall and wide. Perfect for organic gardeners looking for small trees in their landscape. It is a deciduous plant and tree meaning it loses its leaves during the winter months.

FAQs for LSU Purple Fig Tree

Yes, LSU Purple Figs do contain seeds, but they’re extremely small and soft, and totally edible. Most people don’t notice them at all when eating the fruit.

LSU Purple Figs are considered moderately cold hardy. They perform best in USDA Zones 7–10, where winters are more mild. In cooler climates, they’ll benefit from winter protection such as mulching the root zone, wrapping the trunk, or growing the tree in a container that can be moved to shelter during the coldest months. If you are patio growing, you can have figs all the way down to zone 3 and we recommend moving the tree indoors when temperatures drop below freezing.

LSU Purple produces sweet figs with a berry-like flavor that gives off maple notes. The flesh is soft and juicy with a pleasant honey quality. The fruit is great for fresh eating because of its tender skin and balanced sweetness, but it also holds up nicely in preserves and baking.

Its versatility is one of the reasons why this variety is so popular. LSU Purple figs are delicious eaten fresh right off the tree, but they’re also excellent for jams, desserts, dehydrating, and salads. Because the fruit has a good sugar content and soft texture, many gardeners also use it for small-batch canning or preserves.
