Antique Apple Variety Performs Best in the Northern States!

Looking for an  American heirloom apple variety that you can't find in the grocery store? The Red Jonathan Apple Tree is one of the best apple varieties to grow as a home gardener.

Bright red apples with a crisp and juicy taste are produced with a late ripening date from mid September through October. The Jonathan apple is known for being one of the juiciest apples on the market! The taste is sweet and slightly acidic and has an aromatic aroma that you can smell even before being picked off the tree.

The Red Jonathan Apple is a medium sized apple with a yellow base and red overlay. With less sunshine, the delicious apple fruit can appear striped.

The best use is for eating fresh off the tree, cooking into your baked goods and desserts, or freezing for later use.

Jonathan apple flowers bloom in spring and the green foliage will flush out to cover the dwarf tree with leaves soon following that.

Jonathan Apple Tree Care

Jonathan apple tree size is perfect for small spaces in your garden. This tree is grafted onto a dwarf apple rootstock and is expected to grow 10 feet tall by 10 feet wide.

The Dwarf Jonathan apple tree can be planted in your fruit tree orchards, in large containers, or planted close together as a good rule of thumb for spacing. They have a growth rate of 1-2 feet per year.

Malus domestica ‘Red Jonathan’ is exceptionally cold hardy and can grow across the United States in USDA zones 4-8. Believed to have originated in New York, it's no surprise this apple tree needs at least 700-800 chill hours to fruit.

Full sun and nutrient rich soil is required to have the best fruit quality. At least 6-8 hours of sunlight is preferred. Apply a slow release fertilizer in early spring to help supplement nutrients.

Are Jonathan Apple Trees Self Pollinating?

The Jonathan apple tree is not self pollinating and needs another apple variety to cross-pollinate and produce fruit. Golden Delicious and Red Delicious are the best varieties to plant nearby to get a good fruit set. It is often used as a parent variety to create new apple varieties.

It does not ship bare root. This tree is grown with a full root system in a pot with soil and will come shipped that way. Check out our blog on Apple Tree Diseases if you are experiencing issues.
