Welcome Pollinators into Your Garden With Catmint Walker’s Low Nepeta

Nepeta 'Walker’s Low' (Nepeta x faassenii) is also called catmint and is prized for its lavender-like appearance that will take your breath away. It boasts spikes of bluish-purple flowers and silvery-green foliage that will look bold yet elegant in your garden.

You should add this plant to your garden if you need to bring in more pollinators. Hummingbirds and butterflies are drawn to the many flowers, and you’ll likely see bees and other pollinators, too.

The flowers start blooming in early summer and will continue through fall if you continually prune the plant. This plant will keep your garden buzzing for almost the entire growing season.

You can grow this plant in a container or incorporate it into your landscape by using it as a border plant, along paths, or in rock gardens. You can take a more naturalistic approach and let the plant behave as a ground cover and let it grow and spread as it pleases. The flowers are highly fragrant, so you’re sure to enjoy them wherever you put them in your garden!

Nepeta Walkers Low Care

Nepeta Walker’s Low catmint is tolerant of cool temperatures and doesn’t like extreme heat, so you can expect it to grow well in hardiness zones 4-8. It will need afternoon shade in hot climates, but it usually handles cold temperatures well, making it a reliable plant to keep in your garden.

Nepeta grows best when it receives full sun, which is at least six hours of direct sunlight exposure. Its color will be vibrant, and its growth will stay compact when it doesn’t have to reach for more sunlight.

In hot climates, including zones 7 and 8, you may need to provide afternoon shade if you frequently experience long periods of consistent extreme hot weather during the summer.

Nepeta faassenii Walker’s Low catmint is drought tolerant once the mature plant is established and can tolerate short periods of dry soil. However, the plant will look its best when it can receive water on a consistent schedule. You can allow the top 2-3 inches of soil to dry completely before watering again.

Never allow the plant to sit in standing water or have consistently wet soil, as too much water will lead to several issues.

Nepeta can be forgiving whether your soil is sandy or rocky and will likely grow in whatever you have! You’ll only need to fertilize it once or twice a year and may not need to at all if your soil is already rich in nutrients. Make sure the soil is well-draining, so the plant is never sitting in water.

Nepeta Walkers Low Size

The plant reaches 2-3 feet in height and width. The plant grows in clumps, with several stalks spreading out from the center, creating a round appearance that complements many landscape and garden designs. This tolerant plant is easy to care for and can forgive some neglect, so it’s a good plant for beginner gardeners.

You can leave Nepeta untrimmed if you wish, but it will look better if you give it some TLC.

Remove spent flowers frequently throughout summer and fall to encourage the plant to keep growing. If you cut back the plant down to half after the first round of blooms, the plant will have a growth spurt and look extra bushy and beautiful by the end of the season.
