Most Popular Fast-Growing Holly for Privacy!

The Nellie Stevens holly shrub has been gaining popularity as a fast-growing, evergreen privacy hedge!

Ilex Nellie Stevens Holly trees have dense evergreen leaves that are deep green in color and prickly with spikes on the dark green leaves. In the spring, this hybrid holly is a cross of Chinese holly and English holly will produce dainty white flowers. It is prized for its low maintenance and care, and being pest and disease resistant.

It produces bright red berries in the fall that are perfect for attracting birds and other wildlife into your landscape. Nellie R. Stephans Holly shrub does not require another pollenizer to produce the berries but will produce bushels more with a male pollinator nearby.

With a broad, pyramidal shape form, the Nellie Stevens Holly hedge can protect your yard from noisy neighbors, provide year-round color with the green foliage, and also acts as a windbreak.

Plant the Nellie R Stevens holly tree as a privacy screen, individually as a specimen tree, or as a formal box hedge. The evergreen bush will grow fast and full quickly!

How Tall Do Nellie Stevens Hollies Grow?

At mature size, the Nellie R. Stevens Holly can reach heights of 15 to 25 feet tall as a hedge. Planted individually, it can grow even larger — 25 to 30 feet in height. The mature width is 5 to 10 feet wide.

How Far Apart To Plant Nellie Stevens Hollies

If you’re not sure how far apart to plant Nellie Stevens Hollies, first decide if you’d like to plant hedges or individual shrubs. If you’re going to buy Nellie R. Stevens Hollies for a hedge, space the plants at least 5 to 6 feet apart for a living wall or privacy hedge appearance. Try to keep them about 10 feet apart to account for their wide spans at full maturity.

When To Plant Nellie Stevens Holly

Like most hollies, the Nellie R. Stevens is flexible with when it can be planted. Try planting in the late fall or winter, as they’ll usually need three or four full growing seasons to reach full maturity.

What To Do With Nellie Stevens Holly Berries

The tiny fruit from the Nellie Stevens Holly shrub are not for human consumption. They’re slightly poisonous to humans and many household pets like cats and dogs. However, you can buy Nellie Stevens Holly shrubs to attract more birds to your property for bird watching.

Plant this fast-growing holly tree across the United States in USDA plant hardiness zones 6-9. It can tolerate full sun but prefers to be planted in an area with partial shade and protected from the hot afternoon sun.

Most evergreen holly trees prefer slightly acidic, well-drained soil. They will benefit from the addition of a slow-release fertilizer in early spring to jump start the growing season.

Water well the first year of planting to establish a strong root system. After 1 year, the holly bush is mildly drought tolerant and will only need watering during dry spells.

Nellie R. Stevens holly pruning can happen at virtually any time of the year. These evergreen trees respond very well to pruning and can be shaped to any desired size. Nellie Stevens hollies are loved for their symmetrical shape. We do not recommend pruning hollies in the early spring, doing so will cut off the spring flowers that bloom on old wood and eventually turn into orange-red berries.

Tiny Nellie Stevens 3 Gallon plants.

I could not use the plants and immediately purchased replacement from another company. Unlike other companies, including Home Depot, the plants had been pruned so that they were dwarf Nellies. The Plants I received from others were between 3 to 5 feet.
