Fun & Carefree Houseplant that's Actually a Succulent!
Looking for a unique houseplant that is easy to care for? The Ponytail Palm Tree is a great choice!
Native to eastern Mexico, this tree is not actually related to a palm tree despite its common name. It is a member of the agave family and is considered a succulent. Many gardeners grow this as an outdoor bonsai tree for its sleek bulb-like trunk and long curly leaves. The leaves can get up to 3 feet long.
The Ponytail Palm plant is easily grown as an indoor houseplant, on porches or patios in a container, and can even be planted outdoors in the correct growing zones as a specimen plant.
PONYTAIL PALM CARE
In USDA growing zones 9-11, the Ponytail Palm can be grown outdoors at all times of the year. They can grow up to 30 feet tall when given enough space but rarely grow to this size as houseplants.
In all other climates, the Ponytail Palm tree is grown as an indoor plant or grown in containers in a sunny spot. When grown indoors, the houseplant can grow up to 2-3 feet tall and 1-3 feet wide. It is recommended to repot the ponytail palm when the plant gets outbound.
Ponytail Palm trees prefer well-draining soil and containers with drainage holes to prevent root rot. Allow the soil to dry out between waterings. Bright, indirect light is best for these easy-to-care-for plants.
