Best Pear Tree for Home Gardens!

If you live in northern states and still want the luxury of growing your own fruit the Shinko Asian Pear tree is an ideal choice due to its ability to store well into the winter.

This Pyrus pyrifolia cultivar features lush white blooms in spring, grey bark, and beautifully green, shiny leaves, thus making it an aesthetic addition to any landscape! Its golden brown round fruit offers a deliciously sweet, crisp taste that is great for fresh eating, desserts, and canning.

The sweet and juicy brown-skinned pears should be picked in early to mid-September and stored through winter at room temperature. They are ready to eat when the large fruit smells sweet and feels softer to the touch. The pears may bruise easily and have a sweet and juicy taste that is slightly nutty.

Produces medium size fruit abundantly for fruit trees of the 20th century in the North. It can be grown across most of the United States. Grows best in USDA plant hardiness zones 4-9.

SHINKO ASIAN PEAR TREE CARE

The Shinko pear tree begins to ripen in mid-August through mid-September. It is exceptionally pest and disease resistant especially to fire blight.

The Shinko prefers full sun and is adaptable to a variety of soil types but prefers well-drained soil. A slow-release fertilizer applied to the top of the root ball every spring will help with the flowering, fruiting, and growth of the pear tree. Apply fertilizer at the base of the tree every year once the pear tree starts producing fruit.

This tree will require around 450 chill hours for best results and is partially self-fertile. The Shinko pear will benefit and produce better from cross-pollination if planted next to other Asian pear varieties like the Shinseiki Asian Pear.

The Shinko pear tree size is up to 12-15 feet tall and wide at full maturity making it an excellent choice for home gardeners with limited space. Prune pear trees in late winter or early spring before fruiting begins. Prune scaffold branches for air circulation, prune back dead or diseased branches, and prune too many fruits on one branch as heavyweight can break the branch. Only prune the central leader to maintain desired size and shape.

These are dwarfing rootstocks shipped already rooted out in the soil. These are not bare-root trees. Water thoroughly the first year of planting as young trees to establish strong root systems. Mulching with organic matter or compost will help retain moisture as these fruit trees need lots of water to produce fresh pears. Do not mulch above the graft union.

Growing pear trees is easy and fun. The apple-pear-shaped fruit will not disappoint!
