Perfect Fast Growing Shade Tree for Fall Color!

The October Glory Maple tree is a fast growing red maple cultivar that makes a beautiful shade tree in any yard or landscape!

The acer rubrum October Glory red maple has glistening dark green leaves all through early spring and summer. The fall foliage will turn a radiant orange to red color late in October and November. The fall color will last for several weeks on this deciduous tree while providing a dramatic display during the growing season before the red leaves drop.

Maple tree October Glory is also known as a Silver Maple and displays a silvery-gray bark. Red maple trees feature tiny but noticeable red flowers that begin to bloom in spring. Its elegant red fruit attracts birds and other wildlife.

The general shape of this October maple is oval shaped and pruning should be taken seriously while it is a young tree to improve overall size and shape to what you desire.

October Glory red maple trees may produce syrup, but it is inferior to black and sugar maple syrups.

Do October Glory Maples Have Helicopters?

Like most maple trees, October Glory Maples do have “helicopter seeds” that fall each autumn. Samara seeds have a unique shape that causes them to twirl and flutter in the wind when they fall, hence the nickname. While they can be a bit of a chore to rake up each fall, they’re hours of entertainment for the youth.

How Big Does An October Glory Maple Get?

This variety of maple tree grows 40 to 50 feet tall with a 25 to 35 foot wide branch spread. The October Glory red maple growth rate is also extremely fast. One will grow 1 to 2 feet per year until it becomes a mature tree. The October Glory maple size makes it an excellent front yard and shade tree to enhance curb appeal.

How To Plant An October Glory Maple Tree

Start by finding a spot to plant your tree. The October Glory maple is tolerant to a wide range of soil types but prefers slightly acidic soil and moist soil conditions along with partial shade to full sun. Try to find soil that drains well.

Begin the planting process by digging a hole about twice the size of the tree’s root ball. Lower the plant into the hole so that the roots will be just below the surface of the dirt. Spread the roots and refill the hole with soil. Once planted, water your October Glory maple tree regularly until its roots are established.

How To Prune October Glory Maple Tree

Most maple trees will do well with a light annual pruning to cut away the rotten, decayed, and broken branches. This process will ensure the longevity of a tree’s health. In addition to dying branches, also keep an eye on branches that intersect with one another and branches that are especially low on the tree. Removing these branches will allow you to shape the crown of your tree

HOW TO CARE FOR RED MAPLE TREES

Be sure to water well the first year of planting to establish the October Glory maple tree root system. Once established, the tree is drought tolerant and relatively resistant to pests and disease. October Glories grow well over most of the United States in USDA growing zones 3-9.

This fast growing tree’s improved heat tolerance and dependable red fall color make this tree one of the most popular selections of red maples available. The red foliage is shockingly noticeable!

Very pleasantly surprised at the condition when it arrived looking very healthy even after being boxed up in a UPS truck for a week. Tree looks like it's struggling somewhat to adapt to being transplanted or still in some sort of shock. Leaves especially at the top look to be wilted and drying out even though we've been having a lot of rain lately. Maybe it's just from planting it so late in the spring. Keeping fingers crossed.

Waited for my review to see if my tree leaved in the spring and it did! I ordered at the end of fall and the tree had already lost its leaves so I was skeptic about its wellbeing. Spring has sprung and so has my tree! Considering another tree for my back yard now.
