Grey Owl Juniper Stabilizes Slopes & Thrives in Problem Areas Where Most Shrubs Struggle

Low-Maintenance Ground Cover with Striking Blue-Green Foliage

  • Soft, lacy blue-green foliage holds its unique color year-round with no seasonal fading or winter bronzing.
  • Low, spreading habit reaches 3 to 4 ft. tall and up to 6 ft. wide making it an effective groundcover.
  • Faded-denim colored summer berries attract songbirds and wildlife through fall and into winter.
  • Hardy in USDA Zones 3–9 and is drought tolerant, adaptable to a wide pH range, and genuinely long-lived.

Grey Owl Juniper is a hardy evergreen shrub known for its soft, blue-green foliage, drought tolerance, and low, spreading growth habit! Grey Owl is perfect for ground cover, slopes, and wildlife gardens. Like other junipers, it’s an evergreen shrub with lacey scale-like leaves instead of needles, similar to cedars. It is a variety of our native evergreen, Juniperus virginiana, or eastern red cedar. Its unique blue-green or teal-colored foliage remains attractive year-round.

This juniper remains short, only three to four feet high, but spreads to as much as six feet wide. The low, spreading habit and open form make it great as a groundcover anywhere with full sun. It is long-lived and, with care in a good site, can remain on the landscape for over fifty years. ‘Grey Owl’ junipers will produce small, faded-denim-colored berries in summer that last into winter or whenever the birds nab them. Its dense center and flowing foliage make it a favorite of low-nesting songbirds and small ground-dwelling wildlife. It's a wonderful wildlife attracting shrub!

What Makes Grey Owl Juniper a Popular Pick for Gardeners?

Eye-Catching Foliage Color: The soft, scale-like blue-green leaves give Grey Owl a distinctly different look from most evergreen shrubs. The color sits somewhere between teal and silver and holds consistently through the seasons.

Versatile in the Landscape: Use it as a spreading border planting, a mid-height privacy buffer when planted close together and left unpruned, a rock garden anchor, or a flowing element in a zen or Asian-inspired design.

Built to Last. Grey Owl is hardy to Zone 3, adaptable to a wide soil pH range, tolerant of poor and rocky conditions, and drought resistant once established. These are the qualities that add up to a genuinely long-lived landscape shrub.

A True Wildlife Shrub. In summer, Grey Owl produces small, faded-denim colored berries that persist into winter or until the birds find them. The dense center and flowing foliage provide ideal cover for low-nesting songbirds and small ground-dwelling wildlife, making this one of the more ecologically active evergreen shrubs you can put in a landscape.

Grey Owl Juniper Care Guide

  • Sunlight: Plant in full sun for the fullest, bushiest growth and best foliage color. Grey Owl survives in partial sun but might not develop the same density or presence
  • Soil Type: Tolerates poor, rocky, and dry to medium soils with good drainage; wet soils with poor drainage are the main condition to avoid.
  • Watering: Water well through the first growing season to establish a strong root system. Once settled in, the plant handles dry conditions with ease and rarely needs supplemental watering

Pro-Gardener Tip: Pruning is generally unnecessary for Grey Owl junipers. If shaping is desired, prune once in late winter before new growth flushes or in late summer after growth has hardened off. Avoid heavy late-summer pruning if berry production matters to you, as this will reduce the fall and winter fruit crop that wildlife depend on.

FAQs for Grey Owl Juniper

Grey Owl Junipers typically grow 3 to 4 feet tall and 4 to 6 feet wide, forming a dense, spreading mound of soft, silvery-gray foliage. This makes them ideal for ground cover, erosion control, or foundation planting with minimal pruning required.

Plant Grey Owl Juniper in a sunny location with well-drained soil. It works beautifully on slopes, rock gardens, borders, or open landscape areas where low, wide-spreading shrubs are needed. It’s drought-tolerant once established and thrives in Zones 3–9.

Yes, Grey Owl Juniper produces small bluish-silver berries, typically in the fall. These berries are not edible but add seasonal interest and may attract birds, enhancing your landscape’s biodiversity.

While Grey Owl Juniper prefers full sun, it can tolerate light or partial shade, especially in hotter regions. However, too much shade can result in leggy growth and reduced foliage density, so full sun is best for its signature silvery appearance and compact shape.
