Fast Growing Oak is a Favorite Amongst Wildlife and Produces Bushels of Acorns
This easy-to-grow Nuttall Oak tree Quercus is perfect for a beautiful, low maintenance shade tree in home gardens.
The Nuttall oak tree is prized for its fall color as well, in mid to late fall its lobed leaves will turn bright red before being shed as all deciduous trees do. The Nuttall oak leaf can grow up to 4-8 inches long. The tree will flower in April and May with yellow green flowers that shed pollen.
The fast growth habit of this tree is magnificent! This vase shaped, fast growing tree is one of our favorite species of oaks and nut trees that grows native to North America. It has the same shape as a pin oak with upper ascending branching and lower vertical branches.
You can commonly see this fast growing acorn tree growing along the Mississippi river basin all the way to southern Illinois to East Texas and Alabama. It can tolerate wet planting sites.
Its acorns are a favorite among wildlife such as ducks, deer, and squirrels! The tree’s acorns in its upper branches will begin to ripen in autumn in their second year and are dark brown in color. Acorn production will increase year after year.
NUTTALL OAK TREE CARE
The Nuttall tree is adaptable to a wide range of soil but prefers loamy, well-drained soil, and full sun. The oak trees can even tolerate poorly drained areas (it adjusts to wet soil) more than any other red oak cultivar and will grow profusely as a young tree.
The Nuttall Oak growth rate is extremely fast… up to 2-4 feet per year. The Nuttall’s mature size is up to 60 feet tall over 20 years and 80 feet at maturity. Space the trees at least 30-35 feet apart or more if you have the room so they can grow to their full potential.
Water thoroughly as a young tree. The Nuttall oak root systems are large and extensive and need a regular watering schedule to survive long term. A slow release fertilizer at the top of the root ball will help with growth.
Grow this fast growing oak quercus in the United States department of agriculture plant hardiness zones 5-9.
