What Are The Different Types of Blueberry Bushes You Should Plant?

• Blueberries are divided into four main categories: Rabbiteye, Northern Highbush, Southern Highbush, and Northern Lowbush. The best variety for your garden depends on your USDA growing zone and the number of winter chill hours your area receives.
  
  
• Rabbiteye Blueberries like Tifblue Blueberry & Beckyblue Blueberry are best suited for warm southern climates. These varieties require at least two different Rabbiteye varieties for cross-pollination and optimal fruit production. The Brightwell Blueberry Bush is also well adapted to southern climates and is self-pollinating, though planting it alongside other Rabbiteye varieties will significantly increase berry production.
• Northern Highbush Blueberries, including  Elliot Blueberry, Duke Blueberry Bush, & Chandler Blueberry, thrive in cooler northern climates where they receive the higher number of chill hours needed for reliable flowering and fruit production.
• Southern Highbush Blueberries, like the Rebel Blueberry, combine the large fruit of Northern Highbush varieties with the low chill requirements needed to flourish in the southern United States.
• Northern Lowbush Blueberries, such as the Top Hat Blueberry, are compact, cold-hardy plants perfect for containers, patios, and small gardens. Their naturally dwarf size makes them an excellent ornamental edible, while still producing delicious berries in cooler climates with adequate winter chill.

How to Care for Blueberry Bushes You Purchased

Caring for and planting blueberry bushes is easy when you know how to grow them. Since blueberry plants like acidic soil,  test the pH level of your soil and add peat moss if your soil isn’t acidic enough.

Blueberry bushes and plants prefer full sun and a regular watering schedule, especially during those hot spring and summer months when the berries are forming.  If you think about how much sun a blueberry bush needs, the best place to plant blueberry bushes is in full sun to partial shade that receives 4-6 hours of sunlight.
