Caring for Camellia Shrubs

Camellias feature over 260 species, some of which bloom as early as October. Other species of camellia plants will flower in December or January and enjoy their colors through April, depending on the variety.

Usually, the camellia bloom time is from late fall through early spring. The camellia variety, planting location, and local weather will determine the exact timeframe the blooming camellia will open up. Camellia blooming season is one of our favorite times of the year.

Once your flowering shrub is delivered, we recommend taking it out of the box ASAP. Give it a thorough watering and loosen the root ball. Dig a hole the size of the root ball and gently place the plant into the planting hole. Backfill with native soil or amended soil. Water the plant well for the first month or two of planting to help establish a strong root system. A thick layer of mulch will help to retain moisture.

Camellia fertilizer should be applied in early spring through summer during the active growing seasons. Most of the time, fertilizing your camellia plants twice is enough; once early in the spring growing season and a second time at the end of summer.

The camellia growing zones range based on the variety. Most are okay to grow in USDA hardiness zones 7-10. However, there are some zoned for even colder growing locations.

Camellia soil should be well draining and they do prefer it slightly acidic. An annual application of fertilizer is not required but does help with root development, branch growth, and flowering. You can grow small camellias in pots or containers if you are limited on space.
