Maple Tree Care

How to Plant a Maple Tree

Are you ready to plant a maple tree? Don’t fret! It is easy. Planting maple trees the correct way will ensure all types of maple trees live for many years to come! Simply dig a hole at least twice the size of the root ball.

Choose your planting site in an area with sun or partial shade. Take the maple tree out of its container and loosen up the root ball if you desire.

Place the tree in the planting hole and backfill with native soil or amended soil to improve the soil structure. Make sure the top of the root ball is level with the ground.

Water your maple tree thoroughly and repeat as necessary when the soil is dry. Add mulch in the area around your maple tree to help retain moisture throughout the growing season.

When to Plant Maple Trees

The best time to plant maple trees is in early spring or early fall. Spring will give the trees almost a full year to establish strong root systems before winter. Fall is also a great time to plant as soil temperatures are cooler allowing trees to focus on root development rather than foliage development. You can plant maple trees in almost any month, as long as you’re able to avoid freezing or exceedingly hot temperatures.

Where Do Maple Trees Grow

Typically found in the cooler climates of the North, maple trees can grow virtually anywhere in the United States. Thriving in USDA zones 3-9, the trees will put out their showy display of fall color in locations where temperatures fluctuate for fall and winter. Maple trees prefer a planting site with well drained soil that receives full sun to partial sun with at least 4 to 6 hours of direct sunlight.

How to Grow a Maple Tree

Try to choose a grafted tree when growing maple trees. This will ensure the mature tree will look just like the tree it was grafted from and you have less chance of getting an off variety.

Our mature, grafted maple trees are ready to plant and easy to grow in any landscape! After planting a maple tree, they can be kept beautiful by providing all the proper growing conditions i.e. soil, air, water, fertilization, and the proper USDA growing zone.

Once established, all of our maple trees for sale are easy to care for and drought tolerant. They will only need water when there is a drought and Mother Nature is not providing enough natural watering. One thing is for certain when growing maple trees, their beautiful fall colors are sure to lighten up any spot!

How to Prune a Maple Tree

Pruning maple trees is important to keep an attractive shape and form. You can prune your maple tree into any desired size and shape. In late winter, always prune back any dead or diseased branches to encourage new healthy growth. When pruning a large maple tree, be sure to not cut off more than 15% of the tree’s branches or foliage to help keep it safe. Choose the right pruning tools to help make the cuts! Small branches will be ok with pruning shears while larger branches may need loppers or a chainsaw.

When to Prune Maple Trees

The best time to prune maple trees is in the late winter or early spring, while the tree is dormant. These deciduous trees will lose their leaves over winter and you will have the best visibility of the branches to make proper shaping of the tree when the leaves are gone but before the leaves flush in spring. While a thorough pruning should be done in the winter, you can remove any other diseased or broken branches as they appear.

Maple Tree Size

Maple trees will vary in mature size based on their variety and climate. Trees like the October Glory Maple and Autumn Blaze Maple will get 40-50 feet tall and up to 30 feet wide. While the Brandywine Maple stays smaller at 20-30 feet tall and 15-20 feet wide. Each type of maple tree will have a unique mature height and width. Make sure you’ve prepared room for it to grow before planting a maple tree.

How Fast Do Maple Trees Grow

Most varieties are fast growing maple trees. The typical maple tree growth rate is up to 1-2 feet per year. Of course, this can be dependent on the amount of sunlight the tree is getting, the climate and amount of rainfall per year, as well as it is particular to each type of maple tree. Fertilizing your maple trees annually will help speed up growth to get a healthy, strong tree.

Best Fertilizer for Maple Trees

The best maple tree fertilizer is an all purpose, slow release fertilizer that will release nutrients slowly over the course of a year and provide nutrients as the tree needs them.

Do Maple Trees Have Flowers

Most maple tree varieties produce inconspicuous flowers in the spring months from March through June. The flowers are small, in clusters, and located at the end of a flower stalk on the branches. These maple tree flowers will often last until early summer.

Do Maple Trees Lose Their Leaves

We have some of the best maple trees for fall color! Like all fall color trees, maple tree leaves do drop in late fall or early winter after putting on a showy display of fall foliage in most locations.

Maple trees in winter are leafless and just as beautiful as they go dormant and prepare for new spring growth. Our favorite maple tree for fall color is the October Glory Maple tree which provides brilliant shades of red and orange before dropping its leaves for fall.

Do All Maple Trees Produce Syrup?

All maple trees have the power to make syrup! Most commonly, people think of the Sugar Maple that produces deliciously sweet, sticky syrup to be made for pancakes, waffles, etc. But almost all types of maple trees can make it -- including Red Maple Trees, Silver Maples, or Black Maples.

How to Transplant a Maple Tree

Transplanting maple trees isn't always an ideal solution but sometimes a necessary one! The best time to transplant a maple tree is in early spring so it has the whole growing year to recuperate from the stressful transfer. In late winter, you will need to start your preparations for transplanting the maple tree to its new location by digging a trench around the root zone. When making the transfer, be sure to replant the maple tree in its new home as soon as possible. The less time out of the soil the better!

Maple Tree Landscaping Ideas

Maple trees make excellent focal points in a landscape. With ever-changing foliage colors, you want to plant your maple tree somewhere where it can be on display for all to see! Maple trees are also great choices to have smaller shrubs planted underneath the maple tree. Hostas are a great plant to have underneath your maple tree as they love the shade and have shallow root systems that won't harm the maple tree's root system. Another great option would be to create a hedge row of maple trees lining a driveway or planted along a fence.
