Redbud leaves are broad, heart-shaped leaves and 3 to 5 inches high and wide. Leaves start as a reddish color but turn many different colors as the seasons change including green, yellow, rosy pink and even purple.
Redbuds are deciduous trees meaning they lose their colorful leaves in the fall. Forest Pansy has a brilliant display of purple leaves with a whimsical appearance. Once Spring arrives, this flowering tree has a pop of spring color with pink or purple flower buds that light up the tree.
Eastern Redbud's tree leaves emerge green in the spring with the same pink flowers. This small tree's heart shaped foliage will turn to blue-green and eventually yellow in the fall giving it great fall color.
Redbud trees start to lose their leaves in the fall and into the winter. The deciduous tree will show fall color in its leaves and then the redbud leaves will fall going into the winter months.
The best time to plant redbud trees is in the spring when weather and soil conditions are best and the growing season gives your shade tree time to establish. You can also plant redbud trees in the fall in warmer climates.
The best place to plant a redbud tree is at least six feet from structures that receive at least six hours of sunlight and has well-draining soil. Although redbud trees prefer full sun, people buy Redbud Trees because they can tolerate areas with partial shade as long as they get enough sunlight throughout the day.
When planting redbud trees you will want to make sure you have the proper planting site for the conditions your redbud tree needs. Once you have this, you will need to dig a hole that is two times the size of the root ball. Next, put new soil at the bottom of the hole and place your plant inside. Lastly, backfill the hole until the root ball is level with the ground.
Redbud Fertilizer
Redbud trees prefer slightly acidic soil. To help redbuds get the nutrients they need, the best redbud tree fertilizer is any all purpose slow release fertilizer. Early spring is the best time to fertilize redbuds to encourage healthy growth.
The best time to prune a redbud tree is in the spring after the flowers have finished blooming. You can also prune redbuds while they’re dormant in the winter although this is less ideal than in the springtime as you'll likely reduce the amount of blooms it will have.
When pruning redbud trees begin by pruning off any broken, damaged or dead branches. Then you can prune larger lower branches, taking care to cut as close to the trunk as possible. If you're removing many branches its better to space it out over several months to keep the redbud from going into shock.
Redbud trees can grow to a mature height of 20-30 feet and a width of 25-35 feet.
Redbud trees can grow pretty quickly for their size. The average redbud tree grows about 1 to 2 feet per year. Regular fertilizing can speed up the growth process and allows your rosebud tree to grow tall and healthy.
Redbud trees are great for any landscape. They can be used as a statement tree, container tree, and can easily fit into any nook you need them to due to their small size. Perfect for small planting sites or yards.
Redbud trees bloom in early spring, usually before any other tree opens up their flowers. They put on a showy display of colors to light up your landscape.
