Blue & Green Variegated Leaves Put On a Show

The Hosta Frances Williams, also called Plantain Lily, is one of the most popular hostas and it’s not hard to tell why.

This variegated hosta has heart shaped blue leaves and lime green margins that mature to yellow beige. The blue green leaves are exceptionally large and can grow up to 12 inches long. The funnel shaped white flowers with a lilac tint appear in the spring and summer growing seasons. The pale lavender flowers have a slight fragrance that attracts hummingbirds and butterflies to your garden.

Hosta sieboldiana is a large hosta variety native to Japan. They are clump forming perennial plants that will spread several feet in the area they are planted in.

Plant this hosta virtually anywhere in shade gardens, around borders, or garden beds as an edging plant, as a ground cover, or in containers. The beautiful display of year long colors will mesmerize you.

HOSTA FRANCES WILLIAMS CARE

Thriving best in full shade to partial shade, this large hosta prefers moist, well draining soil that is rich in organic matter. The Frances Williams Hosta will tolerate a planting site with morning sun or filtered light but should be protected from the afternoon sun. An annual application of slow release fertilizer will provide nutrients the hosta needs to grow healthy and thrive.

The Frances Williams Hosta size is up to 2-3 feet tall and 3-4 feet wide at full maturity. In colder climates, the large leaves may die back during winter. When the threat of winter frost is gone, you can clear up spent foliage and blossoms to encourage new growth for spring. Divide hostas in early spring or late summer.

Grow this Frances Williams Hosta across the United States in USDA hardiness zones 3-9. It is extremely low maintenance and easy to care for. Be sure to water thoroughly the first year of planting to establish a strong root system.
