Tough, Frost Resistant Gardenia Variety with Highly Fragrant Blooms

This tough Frost Proof gardenia shrub is known for keeping its fragrant blooms even in unexpected freezing weather. If you’re looking for an elegant hedge or foundation plant that won’t lose its flowers even after late spring frosts, this is the perfect plant for you.

The Gardenia shrub features a more upright growing habit that supports shiny, dark green leaves and fragrant white, 2 to 3 inch flower bulbs. This gardenia plant simply smells amazing while in bloom time during the summer months.

The Frostproof gardenia size can be maintained as small as 12-14 inches tall in a pot or container, but grows to about 3 feet tall outdoors. This slow-growing frost proof gardenia plant will eventually grow up to 5 feet tall and 4 feet wide at maturity after several years.

Fragrant white flower buds resist mid-spring frosts without damage and need regular weekly watering during the spring growing season for best results. The surrounding soil must retain moisture to provide these gardenia flowers with the green foliage undersides of this flowering shrub.

Frost Free Gardenia Care

Gardenia jasminoides frostproof plant thrives best with more direct, full sun compared to other gardenia varieties but can grow in partial sun, or morning sun with afternoon shade if in extreme temperatures with cold snaps. Can also grow in partial shade if you live in a hot area like Florida. Well-drained soil is best.

These plants take lots of energy to produce their white flowers and the more acidic soils the better. Gardenias prefer their soil pH to be between 5.5 and 6.5. You can do this by adding sulfur or other acidifying components to lower the pH. Home gardeners can find these at your local gardening center if you do not have access to it. This is the only special care this plant takes to grow gardenias in the correct growing conditions. Perform a soil test if you are unsure about the acidity.

This evergreen shrub grows best in plant hardiness zones 7-10 in the southern United States. The growing zones indicate that it has cold hardiness qualities but cannot withstand intense winter weather like up north.

Frost proof Gardenia care is easy to master and worth it for the breathtaking, sweet-smelling double flowers that light up your landscape in the summertime. When the plant arrives, be sure to spread out roots in the root ball to encourage fast growth when you are planting. A layer of organic mulch or organic matter like peat moss spread atop the planting site will help maintain moisture.

If your gardenia plant isn’t provided the best environment, it can weaken the plant and make it an easy target for spider mites. Insecticidal soap is best to get rid of them. Gardenias require an annual application of slow-release fertilizer to perform best.

You can grow these gardenias as potted plants. Choose a container double the size of the nursery container and be sure to pot up when the pot becomes too small. If planting in the ground, dig a hole double the size of the pot it comes shipped in and backfills with nutrient-dense soil.

This frost proof gardenia plant for sale will arrive as a healthy plant with a sweet scent that you will love! They make perfect cut flowers and can enhance any garden design!

Shipping information

Once your Frost Proof Gardenia Shrub order is placed, we will ship your plant(s) within seven business days year round unless during the checkout process you request otherwise in the space provided to do so.

Perfect Plants’ shipping specialists carefully package your plants using a proven packaging method that ensures your plants arrive healthy, colorfully alive and ready to flourish. We’ve coined the term ‘upside down box test’ and we do just that; we carefully package so that regardless of the direction your box is handled, it will not harm your precious plant that’s inside.

No shipping process is without a problem from time to time. On rare occasions some plants may experience some of the following during their transit: drooping, minor leaf-loss and/or minimal yellowing/discoloration, minor limb damage, etc. These instances are quite rare, but can happen when shipping plants in boxes.

Plants normally recover within a few weeks after planting. If a damaged box has injured your plant on the inside, please notify us within 5 days of receiving you package(s) by emailing us a photograph of the damage.

We always do our very best to ensure that your plants are packed and shipped in the safest, gentlest and most effective way possible.

Will my plants and trees look like the photographs?

Absolutely! Unlike other online nurseries, our photos are of actual plants and trees we’ve grown here, on our family operated nursery.

our story Lloyd nursery

Growing our own plants and trees helps to ensure we ship you the best quality plants that are free of pests and diseases.

Your plants and trees may however not ship with flowers on them, like the photographs. This all depends on the time of year you buy your plant or tree. Crape Myrtle trees, for example, only bloom during the summer months, so if you purchase one during the spring or fall, they would ship without flowers. Once planted, your plants will grow and thrive giving you flowers for many years to come!

Pot Sizes

Pot sizes (commonly referred to in gallons) are shipped in the same size nursery trade pots which may vary in actual volume. Some plants may have been at the approximate pot size listed, but require excess dirt to be removed so that you will not be paying any additional shipping costs. This doesn’t happen very often though.

Care

FROST PROOF GARDENIA CARE:

This beautiful Gardenia does well in full sun to partial shade. It can be grown in heavier shade, but more sun is ideal for flower production. It needs weekly, regular watering and may need more in extreme heat.

The Frost Proof Gardenia prefers moist but not soggy, well-drained and acidic soil. Blooms develop best on new growth, so prune in late winter to remove any dead branches and maintain shape.

Multiples should be planted 4 or more feet apart.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Dig a hole approximately twice as wide as your new plant’s root ball and deep enough so that the top of the root ball is equal with the ground level.

Loosen the root ball using a small garden spade or by hand. Breaking smaller outer roots can encourage growth into the new soil, but take care to not damage large primary roots.

Place the plant in the hole and ensure that it is situated evenly upright. Use the excavated soil to fill in around the root ball, using your foot to pack it in firmly. Thoroughly soak with a hose as you fill in the dirt. Take great care to not leave any gaps or air spaces around the root ball as this could kill the plant.

A 2-4 inch layer of mulch is strongly recommended to help retain moisture and discourage weed growth. Apply mulch over the entire planting area but keep away from the stems or trunk by a few inches. Ensure that the plant and surrounding soil is completely soaked with water.

To ensure the proper nutrients are available for the life of your Frost Proof Gardenia, our proprietary Perfect Plants Special Blend Soil and a once yearly application of Nutricote Total 360 Fertilizer are great considerations for your new plants!
