Care for Viburnum
When caring for your viburnum you will want to make sure it’s getting proper watering, sunlight, and fertilizer. Viburnums should be watered a couple of days a week or when the soil is dry to the touch, they also need at least 4 hours of sunlight a day. As for viburnum fertilizer, you can use an all purpose fertilizer and use the dosage listed on the product.
When to Prune Viburnum
The best time to prune viburnum is in late winter to early spring while the plants are dormant. This also helps the viburnum heal fast and be more pest resistant.
How to Prune Viburnum
It’s best to prune a viburnum immediately after flowering. When pruning viburnum you will want to start by trimming away any dead, broken, or diseased branches. Once you finish trimming your viburnum hedges or shrubs, you can then shape and size the plant to your desire. Viburnum can take heavy pruning and removing flower heads will actually encourage new, healthy growth.
How to Plant Viburnum Shrubs
To plant a viburnum shrub you will first want to pick your planting site making sure that it has the proper light conditions. Once you have chosen your site, dig a hole that is two times the size of the root ball and fill it with some nutrient soil. Next, place your plant in the hole and backfill with soil until the root ball is fully covered. You can even plant multiple viburnum in a row to create a viburnum hedge for privacy.
How to Grow Viburnum
To grow viburnum you should plant it in spring or fall. Viburnums prefer well draining soil that is rich in nutrients. You can use organic material, compost, or fertilizer to help encourage healthy growth. Viburnum produces more blooms and berries when they're grown in full sun, but can also tolerate light shade.
When Does Viburnum Bloom?
Most viburnum flowers bloom in the spring. When they bloom for the season, viburnums will often have white to pinkish flowers that appear. While not all viburnum shrubs will produce a scent when they bloom, most of the time the flowers will release a sweet scent. Viburnum flowers will be in bloom for the entire spring and summer seasons.
How Fast Does Viburnum Grow?
As they’re maturing, viburnums can grow 1 to 2 feet each year, which is why they’re often used for hedges and deer resistant shrubs. The Sweet Viburnum, Chindo Viburnum Shrub, and Chinese Snowball Viburnum bush each grow from 10 to 30 feet at full height, so it won't take more than a few years to create a viburnum hedge for privacy.
Is Viburnum Toxic to Dogs?
There is currently no species of viburnum that is listed as toxic to dogs according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals® (ASPCA®). While some viburnum shrubs are mildly toxic and will cause slight discomfort to humans, you won’t have any issues with your dog around these plants.
