Deer Candy Persimmon Tree Produces Early-Season, Nutritious Fruit Deer Love
The Deer Candy Persimmon Tree is a grafted American variety that produces sweet, orange fruit in early fall—perfect for drawing deer in from miles away. Easy to grow, low maintenance, and self-pollinating, it’s ideal for hunters and wildlife enthusiasts alike.
This variety of American Persimmon tree is easy to grow and the perfect fruit tree to add to your property. Producing deliciously sweet orange persimmon fruits in the fall with beautiful foliage that changes color as soon as the temperature drops, this fruit tree is a great addition that deer will seek out from all over. Deer are known to walk past corn to eat fresh-dropping persimmons!
Deer Candy Persimmons will bear fruit in 2-3 years. The collection includes the varieties Prok Persimmon, Yates Persimmon, and Morris Burton Persimmon.
With smaller fruits (ripe fruit is about the size of a golf ball) than its Asian Persimmon cousins such as the Fuyu Persimmon, the American Persimmon fruit is round, bright orange, and very sweet. The orange fruit will ripen in the early fall to soft, sweet flesh. Unripe fruit tastes astringent and firm. Fruit begins to ripen in late August through October and has a nutty flavor.
The shade tree is sometimes grown for its ornamental fall colors. With dark green foliage in the spring and summer, the leaves will change to shades of oranges and yellows as the fall season emerges. Being deciduous, it will lose its leaves over winter to go into dormancy.
The Deer Candy Persimmon Tree is native to North America and is best planted as specimen trees or in a fruit tree orchard. There are loads of uses for the persimmon fruit including fresh eating right off the tree, cooking into baked goods, jams & jellies, or dried for later use. They taste delicious!
FEMALE PERSIMMON TREE CARE
Grow this native tree across the United States in USDA growing zones 5-9. With little maintenance needed to keep it thriving, it is adaptable to most soil sites as long as it’s in full sun with well-draining soil.
It is an important food source for many wildlife including deer, birds, and squirrels. American Persimmon is moderately salt tolerant and a good choice for coastal plantings.
This Female Persimmon tree is specifically picked to pollinate male flowering persimmon trees found in the wild.
The mature tree size is up to 30-50 feet tall but they can get taller in the wild with a 20-25 foot spread. The American Persimmon tree growth rate is moderate, up to 1 foot per year. It does not require another fruit tree in the area for cross-pollination. You can plant only (1) or a dozen if you really want to put fruit on the ground for deer.
Recommend (2) or more trees for high fruit yields which equal more deer!
Apply a slow-release fertilizer in the early spring to help boost growth and fruit production. Prune the tree as desired to maintain shape and size. Maintain a regular watering schedule until the tree is well established. It is drought tolerant once established. The easygoing female persimmon tree has no serious pest or disease problems.
